Düsseldorf Masters #6: KÄLLBERG and QIU easily prevailed
The start of the Düsseldorf Masters VI took place on Friday without any surprises. At the fifth men's tournament, the favourites prevailed in the round of 16. On Saturday from 10 a.m. onwards, in the round of the best eight, the Egyptian Omar ASSAR and Benedikt DUDA will enter the Masters for the first time this weekend. All matches will be broadcast live on Sportdeutschland.TV, Borussia-TV and on tischtennis.de.
The two WR-Top 60 players Anton KÄLLBERG (Sweden) and Dang QIU had no problems in their opening matches in the evening. KÄLLBERG won against the experienced Thomas KEINATH (Slovakia) and Dang QIU against the german youngster Tobias SLANINA without losing a game. The other matches on the Arag Center Court actually promised more suspense. Surprisingly, Nils HOHMEIER won against TTBL player Dennis KLEIN with just loosing one game. And Gerrit ENGEMANN also expected surprisingly little resistance against Cedric MEISSNER, the Franziska conqueror at the German Championships 2020, in his 4-0 victory. But then it went really exciting at the end of the first day of the Masters. Tobias HIPPLER (WR 233) was able to turn a 3-0 set deficit into a victory against Kirill FADEEV (WR 489), who is more than 200 places behind him in the world rankings.
All table tennis fans can look forward to four interesting quarter finals tomorrow. Fan Bo MENG will then meet Anton KÄLBERG in the first game at 10 a.m. Afterwards Dang QIU wants to make his fifth semi-final appearance in the fifth Masters perfect against Gerrit Engemann. The top seeded Omar Assar will meet Nils Hohmeier again at 11.50 am and the last match of the day will be between Benedikt DUDA and Tobias HIPPLER.
The Düsseldorf Masters, organized by Borussia Düsseldorf with the support of the German Table Tennis Federation, is held almost weekly from June to August at the ARAG CenterCourt in a knockout system with up to 16 world-class players and is intended to shorten the competition break caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. All tournaments will be broadcast live on Sportdeutschland.TV, Borussia-TV and on tischtennis.de.
