European goodbye with the crown for Adina DIACONU

European Youth Top 10 in Worcester
Last European major tournament in junior category, Adina DIACONU sealed with the triumph. Romania’s young star clinched the title at the European Youth Top 10 in Worcester by beating all her adversaries except Jennie WOLF of Germany. Anastasia KOLISH of Russia is second, followed by WOLF.
“This is my last tournament in Europe in this category and I am proud I concluded it victoriously. I will participate at the World Championships, but concerning Old Continent that is it,” said DIACONU who won silver medal at the European Youth Championships in singles earlier this summer.
Former cadet champion had a very difficult start.
“ I am notorious for my slow start, so the beginning with two well seeded Romanian players in opening rounds, Andreea DRAGOMAN and Tania PLAIAN was not an easy task. I won it eventually, but it was not easy,” explained Adina.
On day two Jennie WOLF upset the favorite.
“It was my fault. I was to relaxed. She never beat me before…In addition ZHANG Xuan stretched me to full distance. It was hard day,” said DIACONU.
The final day brought back some unpleasant memories.
“ I had to play against Russia’s player first. The pain from the defeat at the European Championships in Portugal against Anastasia KOLISH was still very alive. I watched that match many times. I was ready for her here and I beat her. In addition I beat Lisa LUNG of Belgium easier than I expected. However in the last in case of Jeanny’s win and my defeat she might took the title,” said Adina.
Everything was open before the start of the last round.
“Last year I won all 8 matches and I needed two games against ZARIF to win the title. I lost 0:4 and finished third. When Izabela LUPULESKU made 3:0 against me today, I was in panic. I could not let history repeat. Luckily on the other table DRAGOMAN beat WOLF 4:0 so she took a lot of pressure of me. I also played much better from the fourth game; I managed to recover and to win,” explained Adina who plays for CSM Slatina.
Next step for Adina is LIEBHERR European Championships next week in Luxembourg.
