Timo BOLL the Men’s World Cup winner in 2002 and 2005 occupying the no.6 seeded position in the draw accounted for colleague Dimitrij OVTCHAROV the no.3 seed in four straight games and thus reversed the result of one year. At the LIEBHERR 2013 Men’s World Cup was staged in the Belgian town of Verviers Dimitrij OVTCHAROV had overcome Timo BOLL in five straight games to secure third place. It is the eighth time in what is now 13 appearances in the Men’s World Cup that Timo BOLL has reached the penultimate round. Previously he progressed to the last four in Jinan in 2002 and three years later in Liège; on both occasions continuing his path of success to emerge as the champion. Later he advanced to the semi-final round in Barcelona in 2007 one year after in Liège and in 2010 in Magdeburg. Meanwhile in his most recent appearances prior to the tournament in Dusseldorf he reserved a last day appearance in Liverpool in 2012 and one year ago in Verviers. In the quarterfinal MA beat Portugal’s Tiago Aplonia in straight games. “In the first two games I had my chances at a 4:0 and 6:3 lead where I played really well. However the longer the game went MA Long was better and better .” In the Round of 16 at the LIEBHERR 2014 Men’s World Cup in Düsseldorf two duels with the players from the same national association faced each other. Marcos FREITAS at the recent TMS 2014 European Team Championships lost just one match throughout the whole tournament; beaten by Timo BOLL in the group stage fixture against Germany. Conversely en route to the final Tiago had won just one of his five encounters before finding form to beat Dimitrij OVTCHAROV in the final against Germany. Today Tiago APOLONIA the no.9 seed overcame Marcos FREITAS the no.7 seed in straight games. “4:0 sounds easy but it was not an easy game. Such thing does not exist anymore on this level. I had the advantage of having already yesterday played two matches he came out cold in the tournament but I have also played well. I managed to play very aggressive” said the world number 17th APOLONIA after the win. Chinese Taipei’s CHIANG Chih-Yuan the no.5 seed accounted for his compatriot CHEN Chien-An the no.11 seed. MA Long beat Japan’s Kenta MATSUDAIRA the no.12 seed in four straight games; Jun MIZUTANI accounted for Panagiotis GIONIS of Greece the no.10 seed. “I started very badly in the first set. I felt a little tired from yesterday and the hall and the floor do not suit me. Yet I still came into the game and have a 6:2 lead in the second set. After that it was very difficult for me “ said Borussia Düsseldorf’s defender GIONIS. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV the best-ranked European on duty in Dusseldorf beat Kamal Sharat ACHANTA of India. However his adversary put him under severe pressure. “ACHANTA played very well we know each other well. In the end of the sixth game I made some easy mistakes. It is not that I’ve thought of a possible quarterfinal against Timo. Such mistakes I do not do. The match was ok for the first round. I am still recovering my shape. However I still suffering from my training deficit due to holidays infection and tooth surgery…It affects my self-confidence ” said OVTCHAROV.

The most successful Austrian club showed team work against Hungarian Postas. On the other side Dutch LI Jiao tried to push his side to the victory but the player who has two WECL titles with Heerlen tonight had no adequate support from her team mates. In second encounter of the Linz`s clash LI missed three match balls in fourth set (10:7 10:12) but continued to the victory. LIU Jia Iveta VACENOVSKA and Sofia POLCANOVA took one point each. Metz repeated last year`s feat beating again TTC Berlin Eastside in five games. It was first defeat of reigning WECL champion. In the previous season Yunli SCHREINER was the hero bringing two points to the French side but club`s newcomer FU Yu took her role this time (SCHREINER wasn’t participated). I have played four times against him; it was a tough tight match of course. The victory is good for me “ said APOLONIA after his match against MATSUMOTO. Two players from each of the four groups advance to the second stage and Panagiotis GIONIS endangered that position. GIONIS of Greece the no.10 seed; successful in his opening contest against Australia’s William HENZELL; the 34 year-old defender was beaten by Adrien MATTENET of France the no.16 seed. Against the odds the 27 year old Frenchman won in four straight games. France’s Adrien MATTENET (WR: 58) is usually anything but a killer against defense. “Well I had a bad day today he played well and my attacks did not hit. I simply could not find a rhythm and could not concentrate. The plastic ball gives me even more problems. But I hope I will still qualify for tomorrow and then I will give my very best” said GIONIS from Borussia Düsseldorf. The defensive strategist is a trained dentist but had not practiced for two years. MATTENET had lost on five previous occasions. “It was unbelievable for me winning today because I had played him five times and he had beaten be every time” said Adrien MATTENET. “Today I reflected on the defeats I suffered against him and I used a different tactic to play him.” China’s CHEN Chien-An the 23 year old left hander the no.11 seed recovered from a three games to nil deficit to beat Romania’s Adrian CRISAN the no.13 seed and thus having overcome Kanak Jha of the United States the no.20 seed in his opening contest like Tiago APOLONIA is assured of first place in the group and a main draw berth. Adrian CRISAN could not take advantage of a 3:0 lead against Chen Chien-An. “I was suddenly unfocused and did a little mistake was not aggressive enough and could not use the match points ” analyzed a frustrated CRISAN.

Under main spotlight will be the best ranked European player OVTCHAROV. “That the World Cup takes place in Düsseldorf is something very special for me. This is the city where I live and practice. My place is only 10 to 12 minutes away from ISS DOME by car. I will sleep at home but still have a room in the player’s hotel where I can rest between the matches. The hotel is even closer to the venue than my home. During the event I should lose as little time as possible to prepare well”. Dimitrij had rough time during the European Championships in Lisbon held last month. He had all 4 wisdom teeth removed the week before the European Championships in September “I’m alive and kicking again after my teeth surgery. I’ve given full speed ahead in practice now for about 2 weeks. Anyway I’ll play the World Cup without too much pressure. After my little aches and pains in the past weeks you cannot expect that I’ll go straight to the top. If I won the bronze medal once again like last year I would be satisfied. Even though my device is usually that I intend to precede first round further compared to last time. MA Long and ZHANG Jike had a long preparation for the Asian Games. Maybe they feel a little tired now. This is usually how I feel after a big big tournament. To beat the Chinese is really difficult: They are either extremely strong or almighty. I hope that in Düsseldorf they’ll be only in rather good shape”.

The teams which met in last final TTC Berlin Eastside and Fenerbahce are unique with possibility to improve their scores on 3-0. One of the clashes which attracts more attention is the one in Schwechat where 2012 finalist SVNO STROCK will play against 2014 semi-finalist Zamek Tarnobrzeg. Maybe is better to say: actual ETTU Cup winner and Austrian champion against Polish champion! It will be the very first home game of STROCK which restructured and rejuvenated team last summer. Tamara BOROS` side can’t count on its no. 1 player Daniela DODEAN who still suffers from a knee injury. However the host side will do its best to reach first win in the group. STROCK stressed on its website that „Matilda EKHOLM (Sweden) Dora MADARASZ (Hungary) Tetyana BILENKO (Ukrain) and the team starlets Lea RAKOVAC (Croatia) and Tamolwan KHETKUEN (Thailand) – who are the youngest players in the current WECL season (17-year-old) – are willing to fight for their chance.” They know very well that the biggest threaten for them should be world’s no. 8 HAN Ying who led German national team to the gold on the recent 2014 European Championships in Lisbon. Top seeded Fenerbahce welcomes Szekszard this Sunday. Hungarian side expects the game with 1-1 score beating STROCK in Round 2. Turkish side is very close to secure the semis. In Group B Metz TT tries to repeat surprise from last season when it beat TTC Berlin Eastside 3:2 in group stage. German side after the best season in its history (all three titles in 2014: WECL German League and Cup) is super motivated to confirm all achievements. Metz`s team manager Loic BELGUISE said: “Last year we were the last team of the group and in spite of our great victory against Berlin we finished fourth. So this year with FU Yu (world’s no. 18) WU Jiaduo Yunli SCHREINER and Laura GASNIER our goal is to finish 3rd or 2nd of this group and we want to win French championship for the first time”. Speaking about favorites in the group Loic BELGUESE added: “In our group Berlin and Linz are favorites to go to the semi-final. For the moment we have one lose and one important victory against Budapest. For our match against Berlin we will try our best and my players are ready to fight. Everybody in Metz TT are exciting for this match and we expect around 900/1000 spectators. All players will play with good atmosphere and good conditions”.
