Austrian Walter Wels, Men`s European Champions League newcomer, created biggest surprise in Round 1 of 2013/14 season. They beat actual German champion Werder Bremen 3:1 playing away. In the second game this night, at Sarbrucken, host defeated Swedish Eslov 3:1. Ironically, Saarbrucken suffered hard loss from Bremen (3:0, without any lost set) last week, in opening round of Bundesliga.

Singaporean ZHAN Jian (world`s no. 25) was man of the match at Bremen, beating in crucial game CHUANG Chih Yuan (no. 7) in straight games. Bremen`s people knew very well that ZHAN doesn’t suite to the best Chinese Taipei`s player and it confirmed tonight. Most exciting moment was one when guest came from 7:9 to 11:9 in second set. Singaporean also overcame Constantin CIOTI in second clash, while third Walter Wels` point came from Serbian Zolt PETE who shocked world`s no. 25 Adrian CRISAN.

In Saarbrucken`s encounter, world`s no. 130, Eslov`s Robert SVENSON surprised 2012 Olympic medalist Bastian STEGER (no. 29) in five games. In last set, German managed to turn from 2:5 to 7:6, but Swede took decisive three points in a row (9:6).

In all other three matches, guests couldn’t take any set. First, Bojan TOKIC (no. 48) beat Mattias OVERSJO (no. 218), losing just 16 points in total, as former Ochsenhausen`s Tiago APOLONIA overcame Kasper STERNBERG. Dan had 9:8 in first set and 8:6 in second in which Portuguese turned on 10:8. After that moment guest had no energy to recover and it was clear in the beginning of third set (9:0 for host).
