Switzerland caused one of the biggest upsets in the Junior Boys Team’s Event. They started the competition as second seeded team in Group H, which belongs to the lower Division, and reached the Round of 16 of main draw. It is the team composed of players who will be eligible to play in junior category next year too. In their Group Switzerland, beat top seeded Slovenia, Cyprus, Estonia and Bulgaria. “The hardest match was in the penultimate round, when we beat Slovenia. They stretched us to full distance, but we proved that we have very strong team. Each player won one encounter,” explained coach Samir MULABDIC.
Lionel WEBER beat Patrik SUKIC , but it was Julien MARKI who opened the door for great success. “It is our third player and his role in that match was very important. It was 1:1bin matches, before he started. He was two games to 0 in reverse, but he recovered and won. WEBER then beat Ludvik PERSOLJA and Elia SCHMID pulled out very tough one match. In last, decisive game it was 11:9 and the last point was net ball.”
In last round Swiss players beat Cyprus and wormed up for next big challenge.
“We drew Romania, the team from the top 16. I did not believe we can make it, but we didi it. The crucial moment was the win over Daniel DAN their first player. Elia SCHMID beat him in the opening match. In that duel, again, we had excellent player on third position. Gael VENDE played perfectly and overcame Adrian COSTEA. It was big victory for us,” explained coach MULABDIC.
For the place in the quarters, Switzerland had to play against Germany.. “I am happy that we managed to put some pressure on them. They were favourites and our chances were very slim, but at least it was good game. WEBER forced Marc RODE to go full distance and SCHMID also had few good moments against Kilian ORT.”
Cadet boys were unlucky by finishing only third in the group and girls were in position to fight for the place among top 16.
“Basically we are happy with the results. I also expoct that WEBER can have good result in singles and that SCHMID can make few surprises.”
