The same Werder but stronger
One title (Bundesliga), one semi final (German Cup) and one quarter final (Men’s ECL) – quite enough to see smiling faces at Werder Bremen’s office after the 2012/13 season. The club won national championships beating Ochsenhausen in the final, whilst in other two competitions they were eliminated by Borussia Dusseldorf. Yesterday’s draw of 2013/14 Men’s European Champions League at Düsseldorf put them in the Group C, alongside with French Hennebont and newcomer from Austria, Weltz. CHUANG Chih-Yuan, Adrian CRISAN, Paul DRINKHALL and Constantin CIOTI, leaded by coach Cristian TAMAS, starts new season against Weltz, on September 6-9th, in front of their fans. They were no. 3 seeds, which could be a good sign, knowing that the team started from the third spot to the crown in last German playoff. Thanks to Florian SCHWARZ we provided an interview with Werder Bremen’s manager Sascha GREBER, asking him, first of all, how he comments 2012/13 season and, especially final game of Bundesliga? “We had like almost always a difficult start into the season. But the team has found quickly together and has become a real unit. In the finals, everyone in our team was able to perform at his maximum, with their unbreakable will to win the surprise was possible. With about 250 spectators in the back, the team was unstoppable and deserved to win 3:0.” – What was the key for Werder`s success? “First of all: Team spirit! The team worked hard throughout the year with the coach Cristian TAMAS. He has prepared the team perfectly for the final. They were in top shape on point.” – Is the club able to repeat the national title and go higher in Men’s ECL than in 2012/13 season? “Our first priority is to reach the playoffs again. Our competitors are even stronger than the last season. At ECL it’s nice to have a good starting position. We are happy about the draw which brought us interesting opponents and a good chance to reach the next round.” – Is there any change in Bremen’s team? “We have the same team, with the same coach. We hope that this will be a key to success. The team spirit will be there from the first day of the season.” – Who are favorites for MECL title? “Orenburg, UMMC and Düsseldorf!” – How do you see the chances of ten times European champion Borussia in domestic league and in MECL 2013/14? „The Russian teams are very good, it won’t be easy. But Borussia has a strong team: If they have no heavy injuries, they are always able to win the titles. Particularly in the TTBL, with this team they are always the top aspirant for the title.”

Not because agile organizers have lack or skills, or any other problem with the organizing aspect, but in reason that this event was unfairly tucked away to the margins in Europe. “Most of the time I spend explaining the importance of this Event. And I had to do it despite the fact that the ITTF submitted a proposal to the International Olympic Committee to add a mixed doubles medal to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic program. If it is good enough for Olympics, why should we abound it here in Europe. It is great opportunity for nations at Old Continent to gain the medal. There is no reason to throw away that opportunity” explained PR and Marketing Manager Beatrice ROMANESCU Nine countries with 19 pairings accepted the challenge this year. Belarus, Czech Republic, Italy, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey will fight for title at the Event that starts tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
