Werder Bremen and Niederosterreich are very close to the semis, after excellent performances in first legs against Pontoise and Angers respectively, while other four clubs are ready to play their first quarter final games: Hennebont – UMMC (January 24th, 19h30 CET), Borussia – Orenburg (January 26th, 13h00 CET, live on LAOLA1.tv). According to the regulations, UMMC should be a host in first match against French side, but two clubs agreed to change it because of Hennebont`s problem with Russian visas. Russian champion plays its five consecutive MECL season, having always the biggest possible goal, but still has no title. This time Tatyana KUTERGINA`s side believes that Jun MIZUTANI (new no. 1 of UMMC, replaced HOU), Alexander SHIBAEV, Joao MONTEIRO and TAN Ruiwu are winning combination. They were playing in hot-cold style during the group stage (2nd place in B), but Japanese MIZUTANI reacted very well after critics that he got from coach KUTERGINA. Hennebont surprisingly won the top spot of Group C, managing to beat away German champion Werder Bremen 3:0. They won last five MECL titles, Borussia 2009-11, Orenburg 2012-13 and it will be interesting to see two powerful clubs in this stage. Timo BOLL & Co. got a second chance after poor performances in Group D (all four losses), thanks to disqualifications of Chartres. All six players in that clash are among the best 50 on ITTF ranking-list. “I think the pressure is on the side of Orenburg”, says Borussia`s played, Indian Kamal ACHANTA. “They are number one in Europe at the moment. I hope that we will see two close and high-class matches in Düsseldorf and Orenburg to have a good advertisement for our sport.” Two semi finalists will be known this weekend. Last week Werder beat Pontoise 3:0 at home, while Niederosretreich defeated Angers 3:1, playing in France. During the group stage “The Greens” were far from the shape from last season, when they became German champions, but the team played unbelievable in first quarter final leg. The crucial moment was Adrian CRISAN`s win against WANG Jian Jun. Chinese led 2:1 in sets, but Romanian concluded the game winning 13:11 ultimate chapter. On the other side, Pontoise performed excellent in first six rounds, winning last five matches in a row. French club needs better win than 3:0 (9:5) to progress. The 2008 MECL champion Niederosterreich did a big step to 2013/14 MECL semis, winning 1st quarter final game at Angers 3:1. Daniel HABESOHN pushed his team to the victory, defeating the 2013 European Championship’s bronze medalist Panagiotis GIONIS in opening clash. Angers counted on two points from Greek, who brought two victories against reigning champion Orenburg (against OVTCHAROV and SAMSONOV) but he suffered that night one more loss, from CHEN Weixing. In fact, all European stars will be present including the two Germans OVTCHAROV and BOLL who share between them 2 of the 5 Olympic medals and occupy ranks 6th and 8th in the world (1st and 2nd in Europe). Do not look any further, in the men’s event, the favourites are synonymous with qualifying for the prestigious and lucrative World Cup. But outsiders still emerge with “Vladi” SAMSONOV, winner of the STTOL 2013, the Dane Michael MAZE who returns to the delight of the female spectators or the spectacular Greek Panagiotis GIONIS. We will not forget the popular no. 1 Frenchman Adrien MATTENET still capable of feats and seeking redemption. In the women’s event, the level is very tight but the player of the moment is definitely the Belarus Viktoria PAVLOVICH, twice European champion (2010 and 2012), ranked no. 4 in Europe and 19th in the world, who won the very tough Czech Open last summer and is ready to make life difficult for players from China (5 out of the 12 girls attending the Lausanne event). For Rachel Moret from Morges, who holds a wild card, the DHS Europe Cup will be the biggest test of her young career. In fact, Rachel is currently at the 167th place in Europe and will compete with the best players on the continent. But the 24 year old Vaudoise is capable of causing an upset as evidenced by her superb performance at the 2013 STTOL where she pushed Iveta Vacenovska (seeded No. 8 this year) to her ultimate limits. German club took its last trophy beating Russians in the final, three years ago (2011), reaching third consecutive title, while now Orenburg has a chance to win third one in a row. They are top two seeds, but there is just one place for them into the semi final of MECL. “Orenburg and Düsseldorf are number one and two seeded teams in Champions League. In this both clubs four of the five best European players are fighting for the ECL-title. I think Orenburg is the favorite but our players will take the chance we got to play quarter finals. The shape of every player on this Sunday, 26th, will make the difference in all the matches.”, stressed Borussia`s coach Danny HEISTER. His colleague on Orenburg`s bench, Valeriy SALABAEV believes that his club is able to continue its winning streak in MECL: “Borussia Dusseldorf is the most distinguished club in the European Champions League, a very strong rival. We lost the Men’s European Champions League 2010/2011 final against this club because of our big defeat in Dusseldorf. We’d like to gain our revenge this season. We are preparing for this duel very seriously. We are going to play with our best forces.” Borussia played under all expectations during the group stage, losing all four games against Chartres and Niederosterreich (two from each club), but got a second chance after disqualification of French champion (because of GAO Ning`s participations in Chuinese Super League). Borussia`s Manager Andreas PREUSS is sure that his side could not be considered as favourite: “We are happy to get a second chance in ECL this season. Our opponent could not have been stronger than the one that was drawn by lot. Orenburg is not only the defending champion it is also the top-favorite of the title this year. It will be our match of the year. The ARAG CenterCourt will be sold out, we will have a great atmosphere and the spectators will see world class table tennis. And finally Timo (BOLL) end Dima (OVTCHAROV) will fight to be number one in Germany.” There are no secrets between these two great clubs, knowing that the main Orenburg`s players were Borussia`s members. The individual facts from both sided are incredible: world’s no. 8 Timo BOLL is six times European champion, no. 23 Patrick BAUM is twice silver-medallist of ECH, no. 6 Dimitrij OVTCHAROV is actual ECH winner and Olympic bronze medallist, no. 10 Vladimir SAMSONOV is three times ECH winner and actual runner-up (1997 World Championships runner-up), no. 44. Alexey SMIRNOV is former Europa Top 12 winner, no. 50 Kamal ACHANTA is 2004 Commonwealth Games champion… “The last duel in 2011 we won against Orenburg in the final”, said Patrick BAUM. “Nearly all of the players from today have been part of the finals at that time. We have to remember that match and our great success. But nevertheless to my opinion we are the underdog. Dima (OVTCHAROV) is number 6 in the world, Vladi (SAMSONOV) number 10. Dima is on the highest level in his carrier and Vladi is playing very strong at the moment, too. Timo (BOLL) and myself, we didn’t play that good in the first months of this season. I hope that we will be at a high level against Orenburg and also Kamal (ACHANTA). Then we will have a chance to beat Orenburg.” The rematch to be held on January 31st (12h20 CET), at Orenburg.

Returning matches will be held on January 25th (Linz) and 26th (Istanbul). In the reprise of 2012/13 ETTU Cup final, Turkish champion confirmed its dominancy against the best Polish club. Zamek hoped that HAN Ying, triple medalist from 2013 LIEBHERR European Championships could continue her winning streak (9-0 in group stage), but she suffered her very first loss against former individual champion of Old Continent Viktoria PAVLOVICH. Great Bielorussian used to be unsolved problem for Zamek`s player. HAN Ying brought opening lead to Zamek, beating Elisabeta SAMARA in four games. Viktoria PAVLOVICH easily leveled on 1:1 against Margaryta PESOTSKA, losing just 17 points in total. When Renata SRBIKOVA managed to beat the most successful Fenerbahce`s player in group stage, CHING I-Cheng, new hope was born for host team. But, PAVLOVICH was brilliant against HAN, bringing new fast win for her side. Finally, Elisabeta SAMARA provided the victory for Turkish champion, overcoming Margaryta PESOTSKA in five games. Berlin`s clash was opened by actual European vice-champion SHAN Xiaona and the 2005 ECH gold medalist LIU Jia. Linz`s player won in four sets.
