Surprisingly club’s progress in European Champions league were halted after Group Stages, but it makes Austrian giants more determined to succeed in ETTU Cup. “After missing the Champions league semifinal after the thriller in Berlin it is definitely our goal to win the ETTU Cup. We will not make the mistake to underestimate any team in this competition, but now we are the number 1 and we have to win,” stated Manager Martin SOROS. First adversary in ETTU Cup will be Croatia’s DR CASL. “We know the club from Zagreb very well. It is and ambitious Club with Zhenqi BARTHEL who can beat almost all players in Europe, with Lea RAKOVAC, from my point of view one the most talented players in Europe and Suncica VUGRINEC with a lot of experience.” Nevertheless, Austria’s giant is ready. “Our team is ok, we will prepare the same way we always did in ECL. The only question-mark is behind Daniela DODEAN’s appearance. After her knee problems we are yet to see how she will play. Nevertheless we have LI Fen and Petra LOVAS in top shape.”

ETTA Chairman Andy SEWARD passes away

Andy became Chairman of the ETTA following an election in early 2013 and took over the post in July 2013. His arrival co-incided with what was probably the most challenging time in the history of the sports national governing body. The ETTA had failed to secure long-term funding from Sport England and an independent review had shown that the ETTA and the sport were in need of a radical overhaul. Andy approached this task with dedication, determination and a commitment to ensure that table tennis was put firmly ‘back on the right course’. He set about making fundamental changes to the structure of the organisation; the administration of sport in the regions; the relocation of head office in a purpose-built central building; and introduced major changes to the governance of the sport. Sara SUTCLIFFE, CEO of the ETTA, said: “In a short period of time as the ETTA Chairman, Andy made a major contribution to the future of English table tennis. He had a vision to make the sport and the ETTA, as its governing body, fit for the 21st century. “To that end, he worked tirelessly and laid the foundation for the future. The sport of table tennis and the ETTA are indebted to him. He had spent a life time involved in table tennis as a player, umpire, volunteer and representative, but it is likely that the work he has achieved as Chairman of the ETTA will be his lasting legacy and of long-term benefit to the sport and all who participate in it.We are all deeply saddened to have lost a trusted friend and a valued colleague. It is now our responsibility to him to continue the work he was so passionate about and to ensure that his vision for the future of English table tennis becomes a reality.” Andy SEWARD Andy graduated with an Honours Degree in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing, and was employed in the IT industry for more than 32 years. He played table tennis in various leagues around the country, including Wirral, Cheltenham and Mendip leagues and represented Somerset in the County Championships Veterans divisions on many occasions. He held a number of voluntary positions within leagues and counties and was National Councillor for Wiltshire, prior to taking on the role of ETTA Chairman. Andy qualified as ETTA national umpire in 1989, an ITTF international umpire in 1992, and achieved IU blue badge status in 2004. He officiated at Athens 2004 Olympic Games; and the World Championships in Manchester 1997, Osaka 2001, Paris 2003, Guangzhou 2008. Andy lived with his family in Wiltshire. Source: ETTA web site
Werder and Pontoise open quarter-finals
Two out of four 2013/14 MECL quarter final games will be held this Friday, at Bremen and Angers: Werder Bremen – AS Pontoise Cergy (January 17th, 19h00 CET), Angers Vaillante – SVS Niederosterreich (January 17th, 19h30 CET, live on ETTU TV powered by Laol, Two out of four 2013/14 MECL quarter final games will be held this Friday, at Bremen and Angers: Werder Bremen – AS Pontoise Cergy (January 17th, 19h00 CET), Angers Vaillante – SVS Niederosterreich (January 17th, 19h30 CET, live on ETTU TV powered by Laola.tv). Other two are coming next week: Borussia Dusseldorf – Fakel Gazproma Orenburg (January 26th, 13h00 CET), Hennebont – UMMC (January 24th, 19h30 CET). Hennebont and UMMC agreed to play 1st leg in France (according to regulations game no. 1 should be at Russia) because of Hennebont`s problem with Russian visas. Actually, French club had not enough time to provide visas due to Christmas holidays (Russian Christmas is in on January 7th, and New Year on January 13th). This Friday, at Bremen, Werder and Pontoise are opening 2013/14 Men`s European Champions League quarter final. “The Greens” are far from shape they had last season, but still have a power to beat anyone in Europe. First of all, they were better ranked team than French side, but they didn`t showed it during the group stage. CHUANG Chih Yuan has just 3-3 score in 6 matches, while Adrian CRISAN 2-2. Werder was clear favorite in Group C, but finished second, behind Hennebont. On the other side, Pontoise is continuing good play from last season, reaching top spot in Group B, overcoming UMMC who was considered as the best team in that group. French side started with a loss, but won last five matches in a row. It was good team work, especially at Verkhnaya Pyshma where each Pontoise`s player (WANG, FREITAS and KARLSSON) took one point (3:1 win). Werder and Pontoise participated in last season`s MECL semi final, but this time just one can repeat it. SVS Niederosterreich is favorite against Angers, but French side showed that is able to beat better ranked clubs (Ochsenhausen in Group A). Austrian champion was pushed on the top spot of Group D, because of disqualification on Chartres, having 2-2 score (two losses from Chartres and two wins against Borussia). Good thing for Angers is that Panagiotis GIONIS, bronze medalist from 2013 LIEBHERR European Championships, plays his best table tennis, confirming that against reigning MECL champion Orenburg (he beat SAMSONOV and OVTCHAROV, but his team lost 3:2). On the other side, each Niederosterreich`s player had their special role in the wins against Dusseldorf. The biggest surprise came, no doubt, from Daniel HABESOHN who beat Timo BOLL in five games of opening clash at Germany. 2013/14 MECL quarter final (leg1): Werder Bremen – AS Pontoise Cergy (January 17th, 19h00 CET) Angers Vaillante – SVS Niederosterreich (January 17th, 19h30 CET) Hennebont – UMMC (January 24th, 19h30 CET) Borussia Dusseldorf – Fakel Gazproma Orenburg (January 26th, 13h00 CET, live on ETTU TV powered by Laola1.tv)

The best four teams are continuing their path in best ever WECL season, expecting first semi-final leg: – Fenerbahce (January 17th, 18h30 CET, live on LAOLA1.tv), Berlin Eastside – Linz AG Froschberg (January 17th, 19h15 CET) The big repeat of last ETTU Cup final will be held this Friday at Zamek, where Polish champion will meet the best Turkish club. Fenerbahce was better in the ending of 2012/13 ETTU Cup, and everybody agrees that it is the main candidate for WECL crown, but Zamek promises big fight. “We are very satisfied with semi-final, but we’ll try to take a revenge for last season’s ETTU Cup final – says Zamek`s coach Zbigniew NĘCEK. – Our opponent Fenerbahce is better team with more equal players. We know our rival very well, especially Viki PAVLOVICH who regulary wins against players from KTS. After last season Turkish club said that they are going to focus now on Champions League and win the trophy. And we will try to disturb them a little bit. All our fans are very happy to see and host so great team as Fenerbahce”. Fenerbahce played under expectations in group stage, but reached semis, thanks first of all to CHING I-Cheng (6-2 individual score). Two times individual European champion Viktoria PAVLOVICH suffered three losses (4-3), while, on the other side triple medalist from 2013 ECH HAN Ying is unique unbeaten player in 2013/14 WECL, having all 9 wins. Last two WECL champions will meet at Berlin this Friday: Berlin (2012 champion) against Linz (2009, 2013). As Berlin’s coach Irina PALINA stressed earlier for ETTU website, her club attacks all three possible titles in this season (one already has, German Cup). That club is unbeaten in Bundesliga, while Linz AG Froscheberg is undefeated in last one and half year. It promises big fight and fully delight for the fans. The 2013/14 WECL semi-final (leg1): Zamek Tarnobrzeg – Fenerbahce (January 17th, 18h30 CET, live on LAOLA1.tv) Berlin Eastside – Linz AG Froschberg (January 17th, 19h15 CET)

The death of Valeria BORZA was a great tragedy. It affected all but the club must to carry on. Next challenge for them is the quarterfinal of the ETTU Cup. How is the atmosphere in the club? “Our players and the whole club are very affected by the recent death of Valéria BORZA. that will make the matches against Tyumen even more difficult in psychological point,” said Manager Franck SEYNHAEVE. In previous round at the end of the year Club Pongiste Lyssois Lille Metropole beat Italian USD Tennistavolo Zeus. “The match against Zeus was difficult in spite of our victory by 3-0. The first match was the most important. YANG Xiaoxin played at the very top to win against TIAN Jing 3-2.” It is the third time that the club will reach quarterfinal of the ETTU Cup. “We hope we will make it to the semis. Tyumen played in European champions League this season and it speaks for itself. So we do not expect easy duel. The German club concluded European Champions legue Group Stage at the position no. 3, thus they will continue their journey in European competition in ETTU Cup. “ECL season was disappointing for us but we also had no luck with the draw. Though Kirill SKACHKOV’S was injured, we tried all against Angers in the second round but at the end we unfortunately failed,” said TTF club President Kristijan PEJINOVIC. Now they will meet Spanish Cajasur Priego. “We never played against Priego before. Unfortunately we still cannot count on Kirill but the other players are in a good shape. Liam PITCHFORD played very well the last months and significantly came up in ITTF Ranking. Simon GAUZY won the U21 title on the World Tour Grand Finals last week. We will have a very hard week with three games in six days in front of us und we will try all to preserve our chance in Priego to come up to semifinals. This time we feel that we have nothing to lose because of our bad luck with injured players and look at the ETTU Cup as a chance.”
