The 2013 MECL finalist French Chartres was a clear favorite playing at home against Weinviertel Niederösterreich but the 2008 MECL champion won 3:0. Above all guests lost just one set. “I was better prepared for the match than GAO Ning. It was one of my best matches in the Champions League. My tactic was essential for the result. It was only one match but to reach our aim – the quarter final – we must repeat the performance” said Stefan FEGERL who defeated Korean in opening game 3:0 (11:7 11:9 11:3). Niederosterreich`s newcomer Chinese HOU Yingchao had expected to play two games as best team`s player but thanks to his young team mates he had just one… “The team of Chartres had to face that I can win two matches. This means pressure for the players of Chartres. I was playing very well against Robert GARDOS. My victory was ok.” Daniel HABESOHN concluded the match against Par GERELL: “I could not practice for two weeks because of insurance nevertheless I played a good match against GERELL. It was an advantage for me that our team was leading 2:0.” In the Round 2 on October 3rd Austrian side will play away too. Its opponent will be Swedish club Eslovs. Chartres goes to Germany to meet 2013 Bundesliga winner Werder Bremen.

Werner SCHLAGER Academy (WSA) and the City of Schwechat have signed a long-awaited cooperation agreement which grants a maximum of peace and security for all project partners in the next years. This cooperation agreement was now signed by the city council of Schwechat and is therefore legally valid. With the signing of the contract the municipality of Schwechat and the Werner SCHLAGER Academy finally draw a line under years of heavy and long-lasting disputes. “We’ve tried to place the cooperation between the city and the WSA on a healthy basis for years. This was not possible. The greater the relief that we have found in a comparatively quick manner a reasonable solution with the new city leadership under Mayor Gerhard FRAUENBERGER” said WSA CEO Martin SÖRÖS. The Werner SCHLAGER Academy which has developed to one of the top names in table tennis worldwide despite fierce headwind from the local politics of Schwechat is now able to devote all the attention to the development of the project “WSA”. The WSA was already bursting at the seams quite often. Every day trainings sessions are held on up to 30 tables. Representatives from 150 nations have already visited the WSA. In addition to the sporting value the Academy also produces a considerable added value for the region state and federal governments. All the missions are from now on supplied to a higher stage of development. The next focus is on national high-performance as well as on the further expansion of the international character of the WSA. For this purpose we will provide you with further exciting news in the next few weeks.

Current women’s world no.1 and reigning Paralympic gold medalist Natalia PARTYKA was one player who left it till late for victory in the National Para Training Centre. The Polish player defeated China’s YANG Qian 3-2 in the Class 10 Women’s Singles final after trailing for most of the match including being down 9-10 in the deciding fifth. “I knew from the beginning that it was going to a very tough match” PARTYKA said. “I played against Qian in London and it was also 3-2. I saw her and I knew she had good performances here. I knew that I had to stay focused and try to play relaxed.” PARTYKA is one of the few players to compete in both the Paralympic’s and Olympic Games a feat she says she wants to repeat at Rio 2016. “I’d like to win a Paralympic singles gold again but it’s not going to be easy as you can see from this match” the 25-year-old said. “But I hope I’ll be able to play well and win the gold like I did in Athens Beijing and London” Also aiming to build on his performance in London is Great Britain’s William BAYLEY who defeated Ukraine’s NIKOLENKO Maksym 3-2 in a close Class 7 Men’s Singles final. BAYLEY a London silver medalist says his performance against NIKOLENKO was one of the best matches he’s ever played and like PARTYKA is next aiming for a Rio gold. “I think it’s the best match of my career because you know I’ve lost two major finals in a row so it was a special match for me.” BAYLEY said. “I was 1-0 7-1 down so you know it was a difficult match. I just told myself to keep battling keep fighting because I knew if I made it close I’d have a chance. There wasn’t a lot that separated us but you know I just came through” BAYLEY added. “I gave everything. I put my heart and my soul into the match and luckily for me it worked in the end.” In the Class 9 Men’s Singles final China’s MA Lin defeated Austria’s Stanislaw FRACZYK 3-0 coming back from being 6-10 down in the second set to eventually win 13-11. This was a performance that also meant a lot to the Chinese player which was the eighth of the day for a dominant China. MA revealed that he had been struggling with a knee injury and could only train intensely for a month before the Para World Championships. “I’m really satisfied with my performance as I’ve been nursing my injury and haven’t been able to train as much as I want to these two years” said MA who is the reining ITTF Male Para Star which he won at the inaugural ITTF Star Awards in Dubai earlier this year.
