Scottish National Championships   Gavin RUMGAY collected his 12th national title and Lynda FLAWS her 3rd and her 1st since 2013.   Gavin RUMGAY produced a commanding performance as he secured a record-equalling 12th national singles title at Bell’s Sports Centre Perth. After the dramas of the 2016 final he produced a more relaxed performance this year.   The absence of several leading players (Craig HOWIESON Kenny LINDSAY & Chris MAIN) and an uneven draw meant that there was plenty scope for some surprise results and players reaching further than might normally be expected.   Lynda FLAWS won the women’s singles event as she swept through her final three matches. The performance of young Faye LEGGETT was arguably the standout feature of the event.   Lynda was happy with the way she recovered after being caught slightly cold by Faye in her 1st match of the day and playing ‘far too passively’. Faye’s backhand attack was the dominant feature of her 3-2 win. Croatian National Championships   Frane KOJIĆ and Mirela ĐURAK are the winners of the Croatian national championship that was held at the venue Sveti Martin na Muri. While ĐURAK clinched her first ever title in Singles KOJIĆ managed to defend his last year’s title from Varaždin.   “Which title do I prefer? Well this year’s” said Kojić only to change his mind a second later “on a second thought I don’t know. I am proud of both titles the one in Varaždin being my first and I like the second one from Sveti Martin na Muri because it is always more challenging to defend a title.”    KOJIĆ was the only right handed player who reached the semi-finals managing to win Roko TOŠIĆ in the finals 4:1 and Miho SIMOVIĆ and Ronald REĐEP snatching the bronze medal. Croatia’s number one player Andrej GAĆINA did not participate at the championship and last year’s finalist and this year’s European Under 21 champion Tomislav PUCAR withdrew from the championship before the quarterfinals due to illness.   Mirela ĐURAK had challenging matches starting from quarterfinals and managed to win the title by beating Dorina Srebrnjak with 4:2 in the finals.   “The entire tournament was very strenuous I had a tough draw since the quarterfinals. I would like to complement the organisation of the championship and give special thanks to Dr Časl and coach Arapović because without them I wouldn’t have been able to win this championship” said ĐURAK.   The bronze medal went to Klara CAKOL and Ivana MALOBABIĆ.   In the doubles category the gold medal went to Roko TOŠIĆ and Tomislav JAPEC who beat Vedran BAKAČ and Josip MUSTAPIĆ in the finals with 3:1. Portugal National Championships   Diogo CARVALHO (club SL Benfica) and SHAO Jieni (Ala Nun’Alvares) won the titles at the Portugal National Championships which was held at Europarque in Santa Maria de Feira. CARVALHO overcame defending champion Diogo CHEN after full seven games to regain his title. Ultimate set was decided by narrow margin.   Regarding Women Singles Event SHAO Jieni eliminated last year`s winner Olga CHRAMKO in the semis. Welsh National Championships   Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS took the Women and Men Singles at the 2017 Welsh National Championships. Charlotte beat local rival Chloe THOMAS in the final 4/1 after beating Beth ROBERTS in the semis. Chloe beat youngster Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw dropping one set on the way. It’s Charlotte 3rd title in total.   Callum reversed the 2015 final where he lost to Daniel O’CONNELL in a tight final. This time it was the Grantham College based players turn to claim Gold winning 4/1. Callum beat Dean Cundy In the semis with Dan beating Ryan OYLER in the other semi.   The U13 Girls singles was won by Bethan JONES. Bethan beat Ruby ELLIOTT Mali DIGGLE and Sasha LEWIS on route to the title. The U11 boys singles was won by Evan WILLIAMS who beat fellow Ael y BRYN clubmate Morgan CUSACK in a great final. The U11 girls went the way of Ruby ELLIOTT who managed to hold off Lowri HURD Lili-Mai MAITLAND Mali DIGGLE and Sasha Lewis to bring the title home. Louie Evans has joined his brother in winning a Welsh title. The younger Evans beat Evan O’CONNOR in the final of the U13 boys.   Lee Thomas retained the Vets title with a 3/1 final win against Neil WRIGHT. The top 2 seeds beat Mark FARROW and Steve HALL respectively in the semis. Steve Hall and Neil WRIGHT combined to sort out Steve EADES and Mark SIMON in the Vets doubles final.   Grantham based duo Callum EVANS and Joshua STACEY took the men’s doubles championship beating Dean CUNDY and Lloyd GREGORY in the final 3/0.   In the U21 women’s event Jamie-Lee HARLEY beat Beth ROBERTS in the semis 4/3 to set up a final with number 1 seed Charlotte CAREY. Charlotte made it through by beating Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw. The final was a little one sided for the World ranked star who won 4/0 and the title.   Like Charlotte CALLUM added the U21 to the senior title with a great 4/1 win vs Marc CASTRO. Castro beat Ryan OYLER in the game of the day 12/10 in the 7th.   Swansea star Dennis BROMAGE took the field on in the Over 50’s earlier today and will take a nice trophy back down the M4. Dennis beat Roger GRECH 3/0 in the final.   On day 1 Anna HURSEY was a double winner today at the Welsh National Championships as she won both the Cadet and Junior Singles in style. The 10 year old Cardiff City member beat Lydia John in the Junior final and Lara Whitton in the Cadets.   Joseph ROBERTS won the Cadet Boys singles for the first time to add to the U13 singles he collected last year. Joseph beat North Wales youngster Ben MOORE in the final. It was great to see ben in the final as he was not seeded at the start of the day. Ben beat fellow North Wales team mate Owen HOPWOOD in the semis as Joseph beat Jack O’DUFFY.   The Over 50’s final saw an old battle resurface as Steve EADES locked horns with Steve HALL. Hall was too stron for his rival in the end taking the title.   Roger THOMAS won the Over 70’s singles in a round robin beating Dennis BROMAGE and 3 others to top spot.   In the Junior Boys final it was Marc CASTRO and Joshua STACEY who made it through to fight it out. Josh ran away with it 3/0 in the end to claim the cup and the title. Josh beat Jack O’DUFFY (who had a good day) and Marc beat Cadet winner Joseph ROBERTS.   The Junior Doubles was the final event to be won and the final match was between Josh STACEY and partner Joseph ROBERTS against Pouyan JAVANMARD and Cade SHORT. The 2017 Swiss Championships   Lionel WEBER and Rachel MORET successfully defended their titles at the individual national championships of Switzerland held last weekend in the city Biel/Bienne. MORET added two more medals on her account winning gold in Women Doubles and silver in Mixed Doubles.   The 20-year-old Lionel WEBER actual No. 311. at ITTF World ranking list was extended to full distance in both his semi-final and final matches. He managed to recover from 1-3 in the gold medal clash against Nicola MOHLER. WEBER played his first matches since he suffered an injury in last November.   World No. 105 Rachel MORET won her fifth national crown. Belgium National Championships   In the Centre Sportif du Blocry Cedric NUYTINCK and Eline LOYEN clinched the titles in their respective Men’s and Women’s Singles Event.
