Linz AG Froschberg hosts TTC Berlin Eastside (Sunday March 12th) in the 1st semi-final leg while Tarnobrzeg travels to Szekszard (Friday March 10th). Both games will be covered live on LAOLA1.tv One of great ECLW rivalries will be continued this Sunday in Austria where double ECLW winner Linz AG Froschberg hosts triple champion and actual No. 1 seed TTC Berlin Eastside. Other first semi-final encounter will take a place on Friday March 10th in Hungary between Szekszard and current runner-up and No. 2 seed KTS Siarka ZOT Tarnobrzeg. Since establishing of ECLW Linz always reached semi-final stage at least taking two titles (2009 2013) and playing in two more finals (2010 2015). Reigning ECLW champion Berlin is still unbeatable so far in the ongoing season winning German Cup and standing on the top of Bundesliga with the actual 10-0 score. They have 6-0 in ECLW but coach Irina PALINA is a little bit concerned over Petrissa SOLJA`s injury. She managed to recover but still needs time to return in her best possible shape. “We hope that Petrissa has recovered from her injury and be able to play” stressed Berlin`s president Alexander TEICHMANN speaking for Berlin`s official website. Irina PALINA added: “This will be the biggest challenge of the season so far. There are two equal teams so current player`s form should decide the match. I trust my players. They know exactly what they need to in this kind of situations. Of course there is still a small question mark about SOLJA`s ability to play the upcoming game on her usual level after her injury”. It’s almost like Austria vs. Germany bearing in mind that LIU Jia and Sofia POLCANOVA represent both Linz and Austrian national team while SHAN Xiaona and Petrissa SOLJA are members of Berlin and Germany. The 22-year-old POLCANOVA awaits upcoming clash in the best possible shape as triple winner of the 87th National Championships of Austria. On the other side SHAN finished second in Singles event in Germany while Georgina POTA missed 100th Hungarian Championships due to flu. Last year ECLW record holder Berlin eliminated Linz after 3:2 3:1 wins in the semi-finals. Both sides won all their games do far in the 2016/17 edition. Regarding other semi-final duel Szekszard will fight for its best ever achievement in the ECLW (this is their very first semis) while Tarnobrzeg targets its second ECLW final in a row. “We travel to our sport friends. Our first and last stay in Szekszard was great except the result because we lost 3:2 (Natalia PARTYKA missed seven match points vs. Petra LOVAS and HAN Ying four vs. Li Fen). But the entire stay we remember in a good light” stated coach of Polish champion Zbigniew NECEK. Hungarian side was superior in the quarter-finals overcoming twice TT Saint Quentin. Tarnobrzeg created one of biggest comeback in ECLW knock out stage surpassing the 3:0 (9:4) win of UCAM Cartagena. 2016/17 ECLW semi-finals 1st leg SZEKSZARD AC – KTS SIARKA ZOT TARNOBRZEG (March 10th 18:00 live on LAOLA1.tv) LINZ AG FROSCHBERG – TTC BERLIN EASTSIDE (March 12th 17:15 live on LAOLA1.tv)

ETTU chief praises English National Championships
European Table Tennis Union President Ronald KRAMER highlighted the importance of inspiring the next generation and valuing volunteers during a visit to the PG Mutual English National Championships. Mr Kramer was impressed by the event at the University of Nottingham and praised Table Tennis England for making “remarkable progress” in recent years. President KRAMER said of the event: “I think it’s wonderful. You see top-level table tennis top players the organisation is getting better and better. “You are making remarkable progress in a number of ways and I was very interested to see your national championships and how they are evolving. “National championships are very important because that’s where your team comes together all the people in your organisation. “For the promotion of your game and the development of your sport these championships are very important including what happens around the championships. We had volunteers who were celebrated here and many events take place around national championships which highlight the importance of table tennis.” Mr KRAMER also spoke of national championships as a stepping stone for young players and a chance for those players to inspire the next generation. “For the players a national title would be the first title you can win before you go abroad. You have some very inspirational players at the moment. You need people to connect to (as heroes) and some are so far away but these are nearer you can watch them shake their hands you can get their autograph.” As well as watching the event Mr Kramer had a series of meetings with officials from the venue – which he described as unique and magnificent – and from Table Tennis England including Chief Executive Sara Sutcliffe and Chairman Sandra Deaton who also chairs the ETTU youth committee. Mr Kramer said: “A lot is happening around English table tennis at the moment and it gives me a chance to meet other people as well and I learn. That’s one thing you should do as a president – keep in touch with what is happening – and a lot is happening here in England.” Table Tennis England officials also took Mr Kramer to visit the Carlton-le-Willows Academy in Nottingham home to a Talent Development Centre and a facility part-funded by a Table Tennis England grant. Sara Sutcliffe said: “We were delighted to welcome Mr Kramer to Nottingham. Table Tennis England aspires to be a world-leading governing body and we invited him to the PG Mutual Nationals to share with him our progress so far and to tap into his knowledge and insight. “He was not just here to see our showpiece occasion but also to meet with the Board staff and volunteers of Table Tennis England and to hold wide-ranging discussions about all levels of table tennis and what can be done to give its participants the best possible experience.” Author: Paul Stimpson

Gavin RUMGAY collected his 12th national title
Scottish National Championships Gavin RUMGAY collected his 12th national title and Lynda FLAWS her 3rd and her 1st since 2013. Gavin RUMGAY produced a commanding performance as he secured a record-equalling 12th national singles title at Bell’s Sports Centre Perth. After the dramas of the 2016 final he produced a more relaxed performance this year. The absence of several leading players (Craig HOWIESON Kenny LINDSAY & Chris MAIN) and an uneven draw meant that there was plenty scope for some surprise results and players reaching further than might normally be expected. Lynda FLAWS won the women’s singles event as she swept through her final three matches. The performance of young Faye LEGGETT was arguably the standout feature of the event. Lynda was happy with the way she recovered after being caught slightly cold by Faye in her 1st match of the day and playing ‘far too passively’. Faye’s backhand attack was the dominant feature of her 3-2 win. The loss meant that Lynda had to battle through the tougher side of the draw: having to beat reigning champion Rebecca PLAISTOW (5 7 8) and Gillian EDWARDS.
