Both German players lost in front of their fans in Saarbrucken After Day 2 of the LIEBHERR 2016 ITTF Men`s World Cup in Saarbrucken Sweden`s Kristian KARLSSON is unique European player in the semi-finals which will be held on Monday October 3rd. Today he beat both Dimitrij OVTCHAROV and Simon GAUZY to set the clash with the top seeded FAN Zhendong beside his compatriot XU Xin hot favorite for the title. Dima OVTCHAROV was considered as main threat to Chinese duo but he lost to Swede in five games at the beginning of the main draw. KARLSSON lost opening set but fully controlled next three and after all took the fifth game very intense and close. One of the most exciting Round of 16 matches was one between Simon GAUZY and Bastian STEGER. Frenchman beat second host player after full seven games (last two he won by a narrow margin). New Father Ovtcharov aiming to become Men’s World Cup Champion
Nearly two months on from his agonising defeat at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games quarterfinal Dimitrij OVTCHAROV (GER) is now a father and is ready for a tilt at becoming the champion at the Liebherr 2016 Men’s World Cup which starts tomorrow 1 October 2016 in Saarbrucken Germany. The world number six who won bronze in the team’s event at Rio 2016 to make up for his singles heartbreak became a father just one week after the Olympic Games to a baby girl named Emma. Speaking about his newborn daughter the German’s face beams: “I am always so excited to come home after practice. I miss her when I am away so I always FaceTime with her so that I can see her as much as possible. It is a unique and special feeling andfulfilsme with just happiness.” Despite the challenges of fatherhood 28 year old OVTCHAROV is prepared for the prestigious event and expects good results “I have been practicing intensively in the last two weeks I feel ready and I really want to post some good victories. I would love a win against a Chinese player to show my standing in world table tennis.” The Chinese players OVTCHAROV is speaking about is none other than FAN Zhendong and XU Xin world number two and three respectively who are hot favorites for the title here in Germany. FAN who is coming off a career defining win against Olympic champion MA Long at the China Open two weeks ago stated: “I am very excited about playing here at the Men’s World Cup. I really want to win my first big senior world title event. I hope I can do it. Other top contenders for glory in Saarbrucken are three times champion Vladimir SAMSONOV (BLR) who will be taking part in his 16th Men’s World Cup just two shy off the record world number seven WONG Chun Ting (HKG) and world number 10 JEOUNG Youngsik (KOR). Kicking off the event are seeds nine to 20 who will play round robin in four groups of three players (two matches each). San-Ei Continue to Tokyo 2020 after Successful Rio 2016 Table Partnership
After the massive success of the table tennis event at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games San-Ei has signed up as the official table supplier for Tokyo 2020. San-Ei was responsible for the picturesque Infinity table that millions of people around the world admired and watched table tennis history being created on at Rio 2016. Commenting continuing the Olympic Games partnership with the ITTF San-Ei President Shin MIURA stated: “All of us at San-Ei are proud to be selected as the official table supplier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games after the success of the Rio 2016 Games. As was the case in Rio 2016 the table that we will supply in Tokyo 2020 will be highly tuned for performance and be visually spectacular. We promise to go past infinity!” Tokyo 2020 will be even more significant for the Japanese company San-Ei as they get to show off their table and brand at their home Olympic Games. ITTF President Thomas WEIKERT added on about the deal that was brokered by TMS International: “San-Ei will forever be part of table history after the iconic table at Rio 2016 which we love. The ITTF is very pleased to be continuing this fruitful partnership and I can’t wait to see the table that San-Ei will create for Tokyo 2020 to again portray our sport in the best possible light to the world.”
Postas Sport Egyesulet ready for the biggest challenge
President of Hungarian side Rostas GABOR speaks about ECLW Round 1 game against TTC Berlin Eastside (September 30th 19:00) Hungarian club Postas Sport Egyesulet lost all four group stage matches in the 2015/16 European Champions League Women but continued in the ETTU Cup Women and reached the semi-final. This time they have ambition to reach at least ECLW quarter-final starting from the hardest possible place Berlin. Their first opponent is the 2016/17 ECLW top seed and actual champion TTC Berlin Eastside. “It is an honor to play among the best teams in Europe” stated Postas` president Rostas GABOR. “Our goal is to reach the quarter-finals but we know that all the players each participants an international class and top player. Of course not only one single match should provide a good position and we know that the first match is perhaps the biggest challenge for us. European Championships Qualifications In the Group H in the first match of the Women’s Championships Division in European Championships Qualifications top seeded Portugal overcame Azerbaijan in straight matches. In Pavilhão dos Desportos de Vila Real in Portugal tonight the host showed no mercy in front of 150 spectators. Maryam IMANOVA won two games against Leila OLIVEIRA but SHAO Jieni and FU Yu finished their matches in straight games. In next round on November 1st Portugal will play against Turkey.
