Croatian National Championships Frane KOJIĆ and Mirela ĐURAK are the winners of the Croatian national championship that was held at the venue Sveti Martin na Muri. While ĐURAK clinched her first ever title in Singles KOJIĆ managed to defend his last year’s title from Varaždin. “Which title do I prefer? Well this year’s” said Kojić only to change his mind a second later “on a second thought I don’t know. I am proud of both titles the one in Varaždin being my first and I like the second one from Sveti Martin na Muri because it is always more challenging to defend a title.” KOJIĆ was the only right handed player who reached the semi-finals managing to win Roko TOŠIĆ in the finals 4:1 and Miho SIMOVIĆ and Ronald REĐEP snatching the bronze medal. Croatia’s number one player Andrej GAĆINA did not participate at the championship and last year’s finalist and this year’s European Under 21 champion Tomislav PUCAR withdrew from the championship before the quarterfinals due to illness. Mirela ĐURAK had challenging matches starting from quarterfinals and managed to win the title by beating Dorina Srebrnjak with 4:2 in the finals. “The entire tournament was very strenuous I had a tough draw since the quarterfinals. I would like to complement the organisation of the championship and give special thanks to Dr Časl and coach Arapović because without them I wouldn’t have been able to win this championship” said ĐURAK. The bronze medal went to Klara CAKOL and Ivana MALOBABIĆ. In the doubles category the gold medal went to Roko TOŠIĆ and Tomislav JAPEC who beat Vedran BAKAČ and Josip MUSTAPIĆ in the finals with 3:1. In the women’s doubles category Ivana MALOBABIĆ and Ida JAZBEC won Mirela ĐURAK and Mateja JEGER in the finals 3:1. Diogo CARVALHO and SHAO Jieni champions of Portugal
Portugal National Championships Diogo CARVALHO (club SL Benfica) and SHAO Jieni (Ala Nun’Alvares) won the titles at the Portugal National Championships which was held at Europarque in Santa Maria de Feira. CARVALHO overcame defending champion Diogo CHEN after full seven games to regain his title. Ultimate set was decided by narrow margin. Regarding Women Singles Event SHAO Jieni eliminated last year`s winner Olga CHRAMKO in the semis. In the final clash she prevailed against Leila OLIVEIRA in five games. Welsh National Championships Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS took the Women and Men Singles at the 2017 Welsh National Championships. Charlotte beat local rival Chloe THOMAS in the final 4/1 after beating Beth ROBERTS in the semis. Chloe beat youngster Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw dropping one set on the way. It’s Charlotte 3rd title in total. Callum reversed the 2015 final where he lost to Daniel O’CONNELL in a tight final. This time it was the Grantham College based players turn to claim Gold winning 4/1. Callum beat Dean Cundy In the semis with Dan beating Ryan OYLER in the other semi. The U13 Girls singles was won by Bethan JONES. Bethan beat Ruby ELLIOTT Mali DIGGLE and Sasha LEWIS on route to the title. The U11 boys singles was won by Evan WILLIAMS who beat fellow Ael y BRYN clubmate Morgan CUSACK in a great final. The U11 girls went the way of Ruby ELLIOTT who managed to hold off Lowri HURD Lili-Mai MAITLAND Mali DIGGLE and Sasha Lewis to bring the title home. Louie Evans has joined his brother in winning a Welsh title. The younger Evans beat Evan O’CONNOR in the final of the U13 boys. Lee Thomas retained the Vets title with a 3/1 final win against Neil WRIGHT. The top 2 seeds beat Mark FARROW and Steve HALL respectively in the semis. Steve Hall and Neil WRIGHT combined to sort out Steve EADES and Mark SIMON in the Vets doubles final. Grantham based duo Callum EVANS and Joshua STACEY took the men’s doubles championship beating Dean CUNDY and Lloyd GREGORY in the final 3/0. In the U21 women’s event Jamie-Lee HARLEY beat Beth ROBERTS in the semis 4/3 to set up a final with number 1 seed Charlotte CAREY. Charlotte made it through by beating Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw. The final was a little one sided for the World ranked star who won 4/0 and the title. Like Charlotte CALLUM added the U21 to the senior title with a great 4/1 win vs Marc CASTRO. Castro beat Ryan OYLER in the game of the day 12/10 in the 7th. Swansea star Dennis BROMAGE took the field on in the Over 50’s earlier today and will take a nice trophy back down the M4. Dennis beat Roger GRECH 3/0 in the final. On day 1 Anna HURSEY was a double winner today at the Welsh National Championships as she won both the Cadet and Junior Singles in style. The 10 year old Cardiff City member beat Lydia John in the Junior final and Lara Whitton in the Cadets. Joseph ROBERTS won the Cadet Boys singles for the first time to add to the U13 singles he collected last year. Joseph beat North Wales youngster Ben MOORE in the final. It was great to see ben in the final as he was not seeded at the start of the day. Ben beat fellow North Wales team mate Owen HOPWOOD in the semis as Joseph beat Jack O’DUFFY. The Over 50’s final saw an old battle resurface as Steve EADES locked horns with Steve HALL. Hall was too stron for his rival in the end taking the title. Roger THOMAS won the Over 70’s singles in a round robin beating Dennis BROMAGE and 3 others to top spot. In the Junior Boys final it was Marc CASTRO and Joshua STACEY who made it through to fight it out. Josh ran away with it 3/0 in the end to claim the cup and the title. Josh beat Jack O’DUFFY (who had a good day) and Marc beat Cadet winner Joseph ROBERTS. The Junior Doubles was the final event to be won and the final match was between Josh STACEY and partner Joseph ROBERTS against Pouyan JAVANMARD and Cade SHORT. Stacey and Roberts won it 3/1 to complete the day. Lionel WEBER and Rachel MORET continue their supremacy in Switzerland
The 2017 Swiss Championships Lionel WEBER and Rachel MORET successfully defended their titles at the individual national championships of Switzerland held last weekend in the city Biel/Bienne. MORET added two more medals on her account winning gold in Women Doubles and silver in Mixed Doubles. The 20-year-old Lionel WEBER actual No. 311. at ITTF World ranking list was extended to full distance in both his semi-final and final matches. He managed to recover from 1-3 in the gold medal clash against Nicola MOHLER. WEBER played his first matches since he suffered an injury in last November. World No. 105 Rachel MORET won her fifth national crown. In the final match she was two games down against the 2013 winner Rahel ASCHWANDEN (World No. 211) but managed to reverse the score to 4-2. The players of the national team clinched both titles at the Dutch National Championships. Rajko GOMMERS won his first national title defeating Laurens TROMER in seven games. LI Jie won her second national title defeating Yana TIMINA 4-2 in the final. LI Jie only lost 2 games during the National Championiships both in the final. In earlier rounds the defender defeated Tanja HELLE Sanne de HOOP and Kim VERMAAS. Yana TIMINA defeated Ana GOGORITA in the semi finales for a place in the final. Darko JORGIĆ and Alex GALIČ clinch their 1st senior titles
Slovenia National Championships At its 26th national table tennis championships in Puconci Slovenia saw the number 1 seeds in both Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles Events win their first title. In absence of Bojan TOKIĆ Darko JORGIĆ was the favourite to the title. In semi-finals stage he beat Tom ŠFILIGOJ by 4-1 (7 6 4 -8 5) while the home-town favourite and 3-time former champion Mitja HORVAT won against the 2014 champion Uroš SLATINSEK by the narrowest of margin the score line reading 4-3 (-10 -5 8 -6 5 8 1) in the end. The defending champion Deni KOŽUL lost in the quarterfinals against the in-form SLATINŠEK who took out another former champion Jan ŽIBRAT in the last-16 stage of the tournament. In the finals the 19-year-old JORGIĆ lost the first set against his opponent (at 38 he’s twice JORGIĆ’S age) but then found his rhythm and showcased why he is the biggest prodigy of Slovenian table tennis right now. He won by 4-1 (-5 8 6 7 12) and secured his first national title at the senior level. Alex GALIČ was able to build on her latest success at the international stage which saw her rise up to number 128 in world rankings and get the better of her long-time rival and friend Manca FAJMUT in the final. FAJMUT the four-time defending champion won the first set but then faded and didn’t manage to win another. Tamara PAVČNIK and Katarina STRAŽAR finished in the bronze-medal position. Jan ŽIBRAT and Deni KOŽUL failed to win their 3rd straight title in men’s doubles after losing the final against SLATINŠEK and Jorgić in a dramatic finish by 12-14 in the deciding set. England PG Mutual Championships In England Paul DRINKHALL won his sixth Men’s Singles title Tin-Tin HO her second Women’s Singles and Commonwealth Games gold medallists Paul & Jo DRINKHALL won the Mixed Doubles on their return to competition for the first time since Glasgow 2014 as the PG Mutual Championships finals day produced some dazzling play. “We were here to enjoy it but we are both very competitive people. We played quite well on Saturday and found a way to win matches but on Sunday we played really well. I was attacking Jo was mixing up the spins and they struggled. It was bringing back memories from Glasgow “ said Paul DRINKHALL. The Drinkhalls beat England team-mates WALKER & HO 3-0 (12-10 14-12 11-6) in the final in Nottingham in Jo’s first event since the birth of the couple’s second child Bonnie. Jo DRINKHALL added: “I’m so pleased to win the mixed and I think we played so well especially in the final. I think we came together better than ever it really felt natural. Sam and Tin-Tin are a really good doubles pair so to win 3-0 we have to have played well.” DRINKHALL won the Men’s Singles beating WALKER 4-2 (9-11 11-6 9-11 11-7 11-7 11-8) in a repeat of last year’s final. The beaten semi-finalists were Liam PITCHFORD who lost to WALKER and Danny REED who led DRINKHALL 3-1 before his opponent came back to take it 4-3. “It’s great to win another national singles title. I didn’t feel I was playing as well as last year and sometimes I had to remind myself to enjoy because it if I relax and enjoy it my game comes more naturally and I play my best “said Paul. HO won the Women’s Singles against Kelly SIBLEY triumphing 4-1 (12-10 6-11 12-10 11-5 11-4). Bronze medals went to Denise PAYET and Maria TSAPTSINOS. “The singles final against Kelly was really tough so it was very good for me to win that.I’ve been working a lot on my mentality so it’s good to see that it’s paying off helping me to build confidence for future matches ” explained Tin-Tn HO. England’s top two Paul DRINKHALL & Liam PITCHFORD won the Men’s Doubles 3-0 (11-6 14-12 12-10) against Chris DORAN & Mike O’DRISCOLL. Jo DRINKHALL also reached the Women’s Doubles final alongside SIBLEY but they were beaten 3-0 (11-6 11-9 11-8) by defending champions HO & TSAPTSINOS. National Championships In the final of the Montenegro National Championships BAKIC beat Dusan BULATOVIC. The bronze medalist are Branko CUBOVIC and Alan JASAROVIC. In Women’s Singles final PETRIC overcame Snezana CULAFIC and in the semis they were better in the matches against Nada MILACIC and Nadja SEKULOVIC. CULAFIC and BOGDANOVIC clinched the titles in Women’s Doubels Event silver went to PETRIC BAJOVIC and the bronze medalists are GOLUBIC-RACIC and SEKULOVIC-VUJOVIC. In Men’s Doubles Event RADULOVIC and TALJANOVIC beat TOMOVIC and JASAROVIC in the final. Third pairings are ISLAMOVIC and DOBRASINOVIC.
