“I would like to win the title for the 3 time but the injury and my training deficit will make it difficult” stated German player speaking about LIEBHERR 2018 ITTF European Championships in Alicante Spain (18-23 Sep 2018) Two-time European champion Dimitrij OVTCHAROV current World no. 5 claims he will fight for his third title at the LIEBHERR 2018 ITTF European Championships in Alicante Spain (18-23 Sep 2018) in spite of not reaching peak of his form. He has been forced to withdraw from the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum German Open in Bremen during his opening round Men’s Singles encounter on Friday 23rd March. But it`s not first time for him to fight with the time in attempt to return in best possible shape. Two years ago in Budapest he faced same problem after 2016 Rio Olympics being upset by Poland`s Jakub DYJAS in the Round 2 of LIEBHERR 2016 ITTF European Championships in Budapest. After that defeat OVTCHAROV explained: “I have to accept that I will not be always the best player in the hall. At some point my dominance will stop. I am not in best of shape. It was not enough time to recover after Olympic Games. On top of all Dyjas was the better player today. Maybe it would have been a different scenario if I had won the second game. I had good opportunity I missed it and the match went on different direction”. Now we did an interview with him speaking about forthcoming Championships in Alicante as well as titles he won in 2013 Schwechat (Austria) and 2015 Yekaterinburg (Russia)… How do you spend the time until 2018 Euro Championships? “After my injury I am finally fit again. In order to get back to a top level I have to train intensively every day. At the moment we are preparing ourselves in a national team training camps.” You were not in your best shape two years ago some weeks after 2016 Rio Olympics. Are you ready now to regain the title? “Of course I would like to win the title for the 3 time but the injury and my training deficit will make it difficult. So I will do not put pressure on myself. Anyhow I always believe in myself and believe that everything is possible.” Whom do you consider as your biggest rivals for the title and why? “Timo (BOLL) is definitely the favourite for the title. FREITAS is a candidate too. I also think that PITCHFORD is not to be underestimated. After his victories against MA Long and me he has great self-confidence. Regarding young players who are capable to create upset? “JORGIC plays very well and is a dangerous player. I also trust Truls (MOREGARD) to have a successful future.” Can you share some your recollections from 2013 and 2015 championships and what was turning point to win gold medals? “In both events I was in top form and did not lose a match either in the team or individual. I truly believed in the victory weeks before the tournament. KREANGA at the LIEBHERR ITTF European championships again 30 years after his debut
Three men and one woman will represent greek table tennis at the Alicante at the 2018 LIEBHERR ITTF European championships: Panagiotis GIONIS Kallinikos KREANGA Ioannis SGOUROPOULOS and Katerina TOLIOU who will be coached by Kostas VATSAKLIS. It is a very strong composition who gives Greece a hope for the place at the medal rostrum. KRENGA will fight again at the European championship 30 years after his debut! It was in 1988 in Paris when at the age of 16 he had his first and last participation as Romania’s player in the competition. He had even managed to get the bronze medal in the double mixed with compatriot Otilia BANDESCU. In the summer of 1989 he moved to Greece and from the 90s to the present day he represented her prodly in the big competitions. At the European championships he has won a total of 11 medals as Greek athlete in all the events and his most important moments were in 2002 in Zagreb whe he won silver double’s men gold with Zoran KALINIC in 1994 in Birmingham and gold in double mixed with Badescu in 1992 in Stuttgart. The last medal he clinched it to the not-too-distant 2013 (silver in the teams) and at 46 years he is still prominent figure on the international stage. »I am happy to last very long. I think the physical qualities and the good life have helped me a lot to stay at a high level at this age. The soul counts of course even though it has been ruining me in the last few years» KREANGA says with a smile. In general Greece goes to Spain with three athletes who have medals in European championships in their tresyry. In addition to the unsurpassed KREANGA GIONIS has won two medals since 2013 at Swechat and SGOUROPOULOS clinched two gold at the European Youth Championship in 2016 in Guimaraes and in 2017 in Cluj Napoca. «It’s an element that makes us competitive. It underlies our psychology and shows the respect and recognition we receive from our opponents» said Kostas VATSAKLIS who spoke of high goals in this European championship as well. «We are also looking to win a medal this year because we have GIONIS one of the top athletes in Europe and the two-time European champion in the simple young SGOUROPOULOS whose style of play is dangerous for all opponents. Beyond that Kallinikos with its huge distinctions in the institution still has a great appetite. He may have some years but I believe he will be threat to all opponents. Finally Katerina is in good shape and she has a very positive psychology after her outstanding appearances in the Summer Games of the Mediterranean. This year we have set up well doubles. Panagiotis and Gianniswill play. I want to say with that we aim for the medal in all three events». In the men’s doubles Gionis will work again with the Slovakian Wang Yang who in 2016 had reached positions 5-8. Sgouropoulos will play with another Slovakian Lubomir Pistei while in the women’s doubles Toliou is pairing with Moldovan champion Katerina Gibrik. The mixed doubles will be joined by Gionis and Toliou and will fight for entry to the quarter finals which will qualify for the European Games of 2019. What could be the next achievement for Portugal`s best player FU Yu who is preparing for the LIEBHERR 2018 ITTF European Championships in Alicante Spain (18-23 Sep 2018)… “My goal in this European Championships and always is do the best I can try to get the medal once again. There is no her name at the Participants ‘ list of the LIEBHERR 2018 ITTF European Championships in Alicante Spain (18-23 Sep 2018). “For some reason I will not participate in this European Championship” it was short statement of actual World no. 57 for the ETTU website. KOZUL and GALIC keep their hopes high and wait for the draw
The Slovenian national team will compete with the nine representatives at the LIEBHERR 2018 ITTF European European Championships in Alicante. In the women’s competition Slovenian colors will be defended by Alex GALIČ Katarina STRAŽAR Ana TOFANT and Aleksandra VOVK while in men they will be Bojan TOKIČ Darko JORGIČ Deni KOZUL Jan ŽIBRAT and Peter HRIBAR. “In singles event Alex GALIC has the greatest chance of a big result which if she is lucky in the draw can get high. She played very well with the Swiss Rachel MORET at the last tournaments but of course there will also be a lot depending on the draw. For the remaining three they will try to gain as much experience as possible but also victory and above all to improve their position on the global and European ranking “said Vesna OJSTERŠEK a Slovenian women’s national team coach. “I feel that the form is on the rise and I hope that this will also be shown at the European Championship.
