CCB Europe Top 16 Cup Montreux The CCB Europe Top 16 Cup started this morning in Montreux. In the opening match of the day no. one seed Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria beat Rachel MORET of Switzerland whilst her compatriot Lionel WEBER suffered by the hands of Dane Jonathan GROTH.   Rachel MORET put POLCANOVA under severe pressure. Swiss player won two opening game before POLCANOVA recovered. Once again in fourth game MORET had a good chance but POLCANOVA stood the pressure. However supported by fans Rachel forced into the decider  (7:11 4:11 11:6 15:13 11:6 11:13 12:10).   “I do not want to sound like an excuse becuse Rachel played very good but I am coming from the injury and I do not fell the game well. It as first match of the Event I am not confident in my forehand…There is a little bit of everything that created such clse game ” said POLCANOVA.   GROTH faced less problems he reached the quarterfinal after four games (11:6 11:5 11:8 11:7) against WEBER.   “I was well prepared. I watched Lionel’s match against BOLL at European Championships on YouTube and I was aware how dangerous he is. Also here last year against OVTCHAROV all the games were very close. I’m a person who lives in the moment.”   What 2018 Montreux title means to you bearing in mind that you set 16-year-long winning span?   “I was really happy. I don’t have any expectations to me in this age. To be still able to play on this high level and win titles is a very nice feeling and I really enjoy these moments.”   Are you satisfied with your current shape?   “I had physically some tough weeks behind me. The break during Christmas was important for me. I think I recovered myself and hope to stay healthy over the new year.”   How do you see the list of 2019 favorites and your chances to get new Europe Top 16 crown?   “Everybody who participate can win the tournament. The 30-year-old German 2018 runner-up is aiming his fifth crown at the 2019 CCB Europe Top 16 Cup to be held this Saturday and Sunday (February 2-3) in the Swiss city of Montreux.   How is your current preparation for the 2019 CCB Europe Top 16 Cup?   “After a difficult year 2018 were my rhythm was missing due to a long-term injury I feel much better now. In November and December 2018 I have trained very hard in China and played some great matches in the CTTSL. In addition I was on vacation for a week with my family and was able to clear my head. Now I finally feel physically and mentally 100% ready and excited for the Euro Top 16 what will be my first event this year.”   How do you see the list of 2019 favorites and your chances to get new Euro Top 16 crown?   “For me the biggest favorite is Timo (BOLL). He is the defending champion. Other aspirants could be PITCHFORD FREITAS and FALCK but almost every player who will take part at this event is able to make big surprises. It will definitely be a strong and exciting tournament! Of course I am determined to have a say in the title again. I feel much better prepared than last year and will give everything I got.”   You managed to collect four titles in last six editions of Euro Top 16. What is the common thing for all these titles something that drove you to the titles?   “In the previous titles I was always in great form. I have always prepared very well trained hard and analysed the opponents. More importantly I truly believed in the victory weeks before the tournament. CCB Europe Top 16 Cup Montreux February 2-3   Sofia POLCANOVA from Austria is the third youngest Women’s participant at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup Montreux but her name stands at the top of the seeding list. In spite of that fact 24-year-old Linz’s player doesn’t feel any pressure as she emphasized on the eve of the event to be held this Saturday and Sunday February 2-3.   The upcoming tournament will be your fourth one at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup. How do you comment your results so far (two quarter-finals) and what do you remember the most from the previous editions?   “My best result was 2015 I felt really good and could win against many top players. In 2018 the result was not the top of the top so far but I hope to make it better this year. I feel confident now with my game. I remember the atmosphere in Montreux was very nice it is a fantastic city and the organization was perfect.”   How would you describe the last year in terms of your results? Are you satisfied with 2018?   “I didn’t play bad but I think I could do better.”   Do you feel bigger pressure than before being now no. 1 seed and what is your goal?   “Actually not I think that every player there is a top player everyone can beat everyone doesn’t matter which ranking they have. I am ready to give a fight to do my best and to fight until the last point. My goal is to show a good game and to win!”   Whom do you consider as favourites and why?   “Me! (smile). CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux   Last year Romania’s Bernadette SZOCS created top upset by clinching the title at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux. This season on 2nd and 3rd February she is ready to justify her status and to defend the gold.   “I already felt hard work in 2019. I had good preparations. I am ready to defend the title. Of course it will not be easy it is even harder ro defend the title. However I am ready motivated and prepared well ” said SZOCS.   Bernie moved to Germany’s Bremen. First tournament in the season was in Budapest.   “It was a good preparation. Very strong competition ” added Bernadette.   The competition at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux will be also very tough.   “All the players in top16 are strong and achieved good results in the past year but I am not afraid of anyone. Considering their rankings it is sure everybody knows to put the ball on the table and deserves to be there but I have been training very hard since last year and I am ready to put one more ball than my adversaries.”   Bernadette SZOCS had a very successful year behind her.   “I am very satisfied with all my acheivements in 2018. I am proud of what I did. It was a very good year for me but I wish even better 2019 because I know I can do it better ” analyzed Bernadette.” I am very proud also that I was the part of the professional T2 League. It was a new and very valuable experience. I learned a lot and I gained a lot of self confidence.”   SZOCS has many new challenges in mind: “In 2019 the most important thing is to stay healthy and without injures. I want to be in Top 10 in the World. There will be also a lot of important tournaments: European Games World Championships and European Championships. Belarus legend started his journey through the Euro Top 16 cups in the French city of Dijon 24 years ago as the youngest participant sharing fifth spot with Jorg ROSSKOPF from Germany.
