CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux   In straight games Bernadette SZOCS overcame another hurdle on her way to defend the title at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux. In the quarterfinal Romania’s player beat Slovakia’s Barbora BALAZOVA (7:11 8:11 5:11 9:11).   “I had very difficult first match here; I had problems with the balls. Now I adjusted my game and I regained my confidence. BALAZOVA has very powerful game and when I saw that she beat Britt in straight games in Round of 16 I was worried. I expected much closer match and bigger problem. However my tactics allowed me to keep the game under control ” said SZOCS.   Dimitrij OVTCHAROV of Germany needed five games to beat Dane Jonathan GROTH (9:11 11:4 9:11 8:11 2:11). He started well but in the second game GROTH took the control of the match. “He changed the service game. I needed time to adjust but even when I did it was difficult to keep the ball in the game. Eventually my change of tactics paid off and I managed to open the game. I was confident ” said OVTCHAROV. German star booked the place in the semi final of the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux by beating Kristian KARLSSON in superb style (11:3 12:10 11:6 6:11 11:1). “It is always hard to play against teammate but good start gave some advantage. He managed to return into the match in the third game but at that point is was too late ” said Timo BOLL. It was great day for Austria Sofia POLCANOVA prevailed against Nina MITTELHAM of Germany (11:6 11:8 11:6 8:11 10:12 15:13) to join him.   “We played many times before against each other so there was no secret in our game. I also felt comfortable against his game but still there were a lot of pressure in this match. I think mentally I was in much better position. The victory over FREITAS gave me extra confidence and I think he felt it in the opening game. I won easily. It also created the advantage for me ” said HABESOHN.   After comfortable beginning of the match POLCANOVA faced great pressure from young MITTELHAM in nervous wrecking sixth game. “I had a good tactic from the begging. He was down two games to one before he leveled to win the match. “I already beat him in three previous occasions and I knew what I have to do. He is one of the best players against attackers but against the players with the defensive style of play he is not that good. However it was not easy. I was 2:1 down so I had to change my service game and he got a little bit tired. I stayed focused and finished the match quickly. It will be much difficult if he had managed to extend the game ” said GIONIS. It was the same in Alicante. I was in god shape then like I am now but I guess IONESCU is not at the same level. However I always need some time to get into the game and I am extremely happy I won this encounter.
