The LIEBHERR TTBL Final’s line up is complete: After the energetic performance TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen beat Borussia Düsseldorf on Thursday and bought the ticket for the Bundesliga final (TTBL). The defending champion will meet 1.FC Saarbrücken TT in the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt am Main on Sunday. Timo BOLL had won the first game against Simon GAUZY but the tenth in the World rankings also lost to Hugo CALDERANO 2: 3. For Borussia Düsseldorf the door to the Liebherr TTBL final was already open after the second singles. At that point the record winning Bundesliga champions led 2: 0 against TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and Kristian KARLSSON was well on the way to becoming the match winner. The Swede showed top shape and had calm nerves in the match against Hugo CALDERANO. After 4: 8 in the first set KARLSSON fought back and with seven points in a row won 11: 8. He also did not let Calderano’s 11: 6 to upset him at 1-1. Previously Timo BOLL had clinched the expected victory and had given Simon GAUZY no chance in his 3-0 (11: 7 11: 6 11: 3) triumph. The semi-final duel was far from decided. The defending champion fought back first thanks to Jakub DYJAS. The Poland’s player who left Ochsenhausen after the season had a fierce exchange of strokes with Anton KÄLLBERG but had more luck in the closing phase. After 11: 6 7:11 13:11 and 7:11 it went into the deciding game which DYJAS won 11: 9 for 3: 2. Ochsenhausen was back in the game. “It was a very good and exciting game in which I was a little bit more lucky in the end ” analyzed DYJAS after his match on the Eurosport microphone. “I’m glad we’re still in the game.” So it came to the top singles between the world ranked tenth and sixth between Timo BOLL and Hugo CALDERANO. Both of them used their complete repertoire played in various speeds and strokes and with tactical finesse. Accordingly it went back and forth CALDERANO went 11: 9 in the lead BOLL equalized with the same result CALDERANO used his third set ball to 13:11 but BOLL forced the decision set with an 11: 4. And in this Calderano had a few more reserves: The Brazilian recovered from 6: 8 to a 10: 8 lead and did not let Boll’s time-out out to interrupt his rhythm. With 11: 8 he ultimately prevailed and recorded 3: 2 victory and thus brought the Düsseldorf player his first defeat in the current TTBL season. “I hadn’t found my rhythm in the first game ” said CALDERANO “luckily things went better against Timo. I am very happy with my victory. ” Simon GAUZY seemed additionally spurred on by the success of his team-mate. In the fifth single the Frenchman made a squeaky clean appearance scored the first four points against Kristian KARLSSON to gain the control over the match. “The whole team did a great job ” said the 25-year-old afterwards. “Jakub showed a great mentality Hugo a great level against Timo. Now we are looking forward to the final on Sunday.” Ochsenhausen meets Saarbrücken on Sunday Timo BOLL was visibly disappointed after missing the final. “Actually we played quite well but Ochsenhausen has increased a lot over the course of the game ” said the 39-year-old. “Hugo played very well today I have to acknowledge that. Against Ochsenhausen you have to take advantage of the opportunities that arise. We didn’t manage that today. We’ll have to nibble a bit on that. ” FC Saarbrücken TT won 3-0 against SV Werder Bremen on Wednesday. Dang Qiu cannot repeat his success of the previous week against Ovtcharov The winners couldn’t be more prominent. One week after the premiere success of Timo BOLL with Dimitrij OVTCHAROV another former world number one won the second tournament of the Duesseldorf Masters today. Next week the third part of the tournament series which is organized by Borussia Duesseldorf with the support of the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB) will take place on three days and will be streamed live on Sportdeutschland.TV Borussia-TV and tischtennis.de. At the second tournament the 2017 World Cup winner took revenge in the final with a clear 3-1 win over Dang QIU for the defeat he suffered against the man from Gruenwettersbach in the quarter-finals a week ago. In the preliminary round matches tournament favourites OVTCHAROV beat Fulda’s up-coming youngster Fanbo MENG and QIU against second seed Kanak JHA (USA). The American shooting star who will wear the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen jersey next season had previously put an end to Steffen MENGEL’S hopes of reaching the final again. With OVTCHAROV JHA and QIU the three top seeded players reached the semi-finals as expected. At the second tournament of the Duesseldorf Masters yesterday Gerrit ENGEMANN was the only one who brought up a surprise in the round of best sixteen. The runner-up of the European U21 Championship 2019 who starts for TTC GW Bad Hamm defeated the world number 76 Alberto MINO from Ecuador the number four seeded player. In the fight for a place in the semi-finals however Engemann was today unable to save a 2-0 lead over Meng today. In comparison to the premiere tournament a different field of participants started yesterday and today due to the TTBL play-offs also taking place this week included JHA and several youth national team players. Joerg ROSSKOPF head of Germany national men’s team was satisfied with the second master tournament: “Dima was hot to win the tournament. Against DANG who previously had a tough match against JHA he played very focused and powerful in the final. You can see from all the players that the tournament is very well received. Training and competition can be perfectly combined in this format. The games are taken very seriously and as a coach you see a lot of things here that we can take over to the neighbouring training hall and incorporate into the training. That’s the way it has to be.” The format which will be held almost weekly at the ARAG CenterCourt from June to August is intended to give the German national players the players of Borussia Duesseldorf and the players of the training group at the German Table Tennis Centre in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia practical experience. Timo BOLL Dimitrij OVTCHAROV and Patrick FRANZISKA three of the world’s top players are among the general group of participants. Four cracks from the world’s top 50 as well as four more athletes from the top 100 make the Duesseldorf Masters the only tournament series of its kind in the world at this level. The tournament organized by Borussia Duesseldorf with the support of the DTTB will be played on three days from the third week of the tournament after two two two-day opening events. The Duesseldorf Masters are held in a knockout system with up to 16 participants. The series ends with a final tournament with eight professionals for which the athletes have to qualify or are admitted via a wildcard. All games of the Duesseldorf Masters will be broadcast live with several cameras on sportdeutschland.tv Borussia TV and tischtennis.de. Spectators on site are not allowed to watch the games in order to contain the corona pandemic. Quotes Dimitrij Ovtcharov (after winning the tournament) “I think I’ve had a better rhythm this week than the last one. The whole match feeling has developed and that was a class better. Of course there has to be more in the future but I’m really happy with the way I played today. Especially last week I always played against Dang out of the setback today the match was more dominant from the beginning. Dang has developed quite strongly just like Bene Duda and that’s why it was a decent win and I’m looking forward to the other tournaments.” Dang Qiu (After his final defeat) “In the end second place is first loser. Dima played better today was better prepared and I myself wasn’t as good and lively as last time. I lost without a chance in the first two sets. In the last one it was still relatively tight but then I took it into my own hands with a few easy mistakes. At this level that is punished directly. A summary of the whole tournament: I am very satisfied to have reached the final.” Kanak Jha (after his victory in the quarter finals) “It was a really tough match. The last time I played Steffen Mengel it ended 3-2 like today. I knew that it would be a close match and I am really happy that I won and reached the semi-finals.” Fanbo Meng (after his victory in the quarter finals) “I was 0-2 down and then I fought my way into the game. Generally I like to play against Gerrit. I have never officially won against him if I am honest. I am very happy that I won against Gerrit. He also played well especially at the beginning but at the end he got more nervous I noticed that and built up more pressure. So I could still turn the game around.” Duesseldorf Masters 2nd tournament FINAL Dimitrij Ovtcharov – Dang Qiu 3:1 (7 2 -7 6) SEMIFINALS Dimitrij Ovtcharov – Fanbo Meng 3:0 (7 9 6) Dang Qiu – Kanak Jha 3:2 (-7 3 5 -5 9) QUARTER FINALS Dimitrij Ovtcharov – Tobias Hippler 3:0 (8 2 10) Fanbo Meng – Gerrit Engemann 3:2 (-7 -9 10 6 9) Dang Qiu – Cedric
ORGANISERS CONFIRM 2022 DATE FOR THE EUROPEAN VETERANS TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CARDIFF
Local organisers have confirmed that the 2021 European Veteran’s Championships (EVC) in Cardiff (Wales) will be moved to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The EVC 2022 will be the largest table tennis championships to be hosted by Wales and the organising committee requested to move their event back a year to allow for the changes in the event calendar due to this worldwide crisis. The event was originally due to be held between the 27th June-3rd July 2021 but the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) agreed to review these dates considering numerous events needed to reschedule a year later most notably the Bordeaux World Veterans Championships (WVC). The EVC 2022 will be held at Cardiff Metropolitan University on the 26th June to 2nd July 2022 and Table Tennis Wales as the host National Association has been working closely with the local organising committee to ensure that the event website will be launched later this year with entries opening at the Bordeaux WVC. Rhian PEARCE Table Tennis Wales CEO said: “We have been working closely with the ETTU to establish the best option for our EVC tournament and we are delighted that the ETTU are supportive of moving it to 2022. The COVID-19 crisis is proving an extremely difficult challenge for society and sport at present and we look forward to welcoming all the players to Cardiff in 2022 to our fantastic event” ETTU President Ronald KRAMER fully endorsed the rescheduling of this event and said: “Of course it is with mixed feelings that we had to decide to postpone what has become one of the greatest festivals of table tennis in Europe. But under the present pandemic circumstances with the World Veterans Championships being moved from this year to 2021 I am grateful to all involved that we have managed to agree on having our European Veterans Championship now in 2022. Much to our comfort it will still be staged in Cardiff by the enthusiastic and dedicated Table Tennis Wales. Although – or is it because? – we have to wait a little longer we are therefore even more looking forward to this great event in 2022!” Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Deputy Director of Sport Owen Rogers said: “We are disappointed that European Veteran’s Championships will not take place as planned next year. We’d been looking forward to welcoming players from across Europe to the Welsh capital and our world-class facilities here in NIAC. “We look forward to working with Table Tennis Wales on making the next event even bigger and better when it returns in 2022.” Event queries: evc2022@tabletennis.wales
