Saarbrucken suffered defeat in the second leg of the ETTU Cup final against LIEBHERR Ochsenhausen 3:1, but 4:3 on aggregate was enough for hosts to clinch the title.
Like two weeks earlier, Slovenia’s Bojan TOKIC had an opportunity to open the match and to set the course of the duel. In first leg he beat former Olympic champion, experienced RYU Seung Min but this time young rising star from England Liam PITCHFORD was on the opposite side of the table. Player placed at position no. 56 on World’s Rankings won first game against World’s 44. TOKIC leveled in next set, but not without struggle. By same narrow margin PITCHFORD recovered to establish the lead again. In furious style TOKIC responded. He had a lead 8:0 in fourth game, before closed that one at 11:3. In the decisive game TOKIC was in driving seat for most of the set, but in the closing stage, in “photo finish” Liam scored first point for LIEBHERR Ochsenhausen in this year’s final.
Bastian STEGER stood all the pressure from Kirill SKACHKOV. Two opening sets went on his account easier then the last one, but still, he managed to seal the duel victoriously and to launch his team to the title in ETTU Cup 2014.
Tiago APOLONIA suffered in the opening moments of the match. He lost first game, before won the next one against Simon GAUZY. However, Portugal’s player failed to stay on winning tracks. GAUZY won third match. Kirill SKACHKOV sealed the victory for host club after five thrilling games, but it was just a consolation. Saarbrucken is new ETTU Cup champion.
