Henderson’s Trusts Arena has been a hive of activity in past two days with the action at the Stag World Table Tennis Veteran Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. At the Championships 1600 competitors from 59 different nations plays on 61 tables.

The Kiwis have performed well in their matches, with Harry TAYLOR, Gordon BAKER and Alan TOMLINSON all advancing through to further rounds. It has been a family affair at the championships, with some Kiwi teams spanning generations. Eric and Shelly NEAL are a father-daughter team and Craig and Harry DYE are playing as father and son.

The German table tennis team arrived in Auckland this past weekend to take part in the Stag World Table Tennis Veteran Championships. The team includes Mr Erwin SCHULTZ, from Heidlberg, who is the senior member of the group at 88 years old. Mr SCHULTZ’S playing career, which spans 60 years, has taken him to all corners of the globe and he is impressed with the tournament in New Zealand so far.

“I have played all over the world and this arena is great,’ said Mr SCHULTZ. “I am very excited to be here.”

The competition is heating up with the knockout round beginning Thursday. The final matches will be held on Saturday 17th May.
