Croat players took advantage of home soil

The first phase of the qualifications concluded today at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Croatia Open in Zagreb.

The first casualty of note on the open day of action was the highest rated player in the qualifications of the Men’s Singles event. Thomas LE BRETON suffered defeat by the hands of Aleksei ZHUKOV of Russia, but managed to secure top position in his group after ZHUKOV lost against Ludvik PESOLJA of Slovenia.

The players finishing in first place in each of the 32 groups progress directly to the main draw, the player in second position advances to the preliminary round; the winners in the preliminary round gain main draw places and joint the 16 seeds who gain a direct entry.

Miho SIMOVIC, Tomislav ZUBCIC, Luka FUCEC all took advantage of playing at home soil and booked leading places in their groups, despite their ratings.

The Russia’s Maria DOLGIKH booked top place in Group 1 after two victories. It was not the case in Group 6, where Krisztina AMBRUS of Hungary suffered two defeats against lower ranked Rachel MORET of Switzerland and Caroline HAJOK of Germany. Ivana TUBIKANEC followed winning path of her compatriots in men’s Singles and also booked top position in her group after being placed at position no. two.
