The main draw of the Men’s Singles event at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour, Polish Open in Spala started with lot of upsets. The Czech Republic’s Tomas KONCENY beat Portugal’s Tiago APOLONIA, the no.15 seed, England’s Liam PITCHFORD ousted Iran’s Noshad ALAMIYAN, the no.23 seed, whilst Singapore’s Yang Zi defeated Spain’s Carlos MACHADO, the no.27 seed.

The list goes on with Simon GAUZY of France and Germany’s Ruwen FILUS; both recorded most emphatic victories against seeded opposition. Simon GAUZY beat Korea’s JUNG Youngsik, the no.21 seed on duty at the recent LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup, (11:4, 11:6, 11:5, 11:4); Ruwen FILUS overcame Canada’s Eugene WANG, the no.28 seed and winner earlier this year of the Men’s Singles title at the GAC Group 2013 United States Open in Las Vegas. In a similar manner to Simon Gauzy, he won in four straight games.

However, next round proved to be final for Konecny who suffered by the hands of YANG Zi. GAUZY and FILUS remained at the same winning path. Simon beat KIM Mineseok of Korea and Ruwen overcame XHAI Chao of China on their way to the Round of 16. Bastian STEGER of Germany and Andrej GACINA of Croatia also reached Round of 16.

Elizabeta SAMARA and Camellia POSTOACA of Romania, LI Jiao of Netherlands and Georgina POTA of Hungary will play tomorrow for the place in the quarterfinal of the Women’s Singles Event.
