2020 European Youth Championships in Zagreb is cancelled

The European Table Tennis Union Executive Board has decided to cancel this year's European Youth Championships at Zagreb due to the high level of risk due to Covid-19 associated with the event. It will be a big disappointment for Croatia Association which has done everything possible to try to make the event possible after the initial postponement from July to September.

President Ronald KRAMER stated: "I feel very sad, not just me but the whole Executive Board and all who were hoping that the EYC 2020 could be held in September in Zagreb , feel very sad. During a long and extensive discussion, we debated from possibly every perspective the pros and cons of the different options. Finally, the Executive Board decided that the European Youth Championship, rescheduled now for September 2020 in Zagreb , should not be held this year. Believe me, while thanking our hardworking friends from Croatia, we have tried as long as possible to keep the EYC 2020 on the calendar."

President KRAMER continues: "All the risks involved, for all these cadet and junior players, for the umpires and other officials, together with the feeling that emanates from the presently rising numbers of Covid-19 infections in Croatia, led us to this for many table tennis lovers disappointing decision. We also felt that we could not wait any longer to give clarity to our member associations, time was running out. We now look forward to the 2021 edition, in hopefully better circumstances. We will use these twelve months to gain necessary experience to be able to stage a 'Covid-19 proof' event in the summer of 2021."
