Patrick FRANZISKA upsets World no.4 LIN Gaoyuan

2019 ITTF World Tour Platinum, German Open

 

ÖVB-Arena Bremen witnessed three great singles victories of host players in the Round of 16 at the 2019 ITTF World Tour Platinum, German Open, but one of them deserves to be pointed out: it was Patrick FRANZISKA win against no.3 seed, China’s player LIN Gaoyuan. Other two victories were recorded in German-Japan clashes: Timo BOLL over Jun MIZUTANI and SHAN Xiaona against Hitomi SATO.

 

Current World no.15 FRANZISKA beat World no.4 in a style - 4:1 (11:5, 11:6, 9:11, 11:7, 11:9), while his compatriot BOLL (no. 7) was extended to full distance by former Asian champion Jun MIZUTANI (no.13). LIN Gaoyuan is two-time 2019 World Tour winner and actual no.3 in the Race to the World Tour Grand Final (December 12-15) to be held in the city of Zhengzhou.

 

Two host players will be the only representatives of Europe in the Men’s Singles quarter-finals, bearing in mind that Belarus Vladimir SAMSONOV was beaten by Japan’s Tomokazu HARIMOTO in five games. Quarter-final pairs are: XU Xin (China) vs. YAN An (China), JEOUNG Youngsik (Korea) vs. Patrick FRANZISKA (Germany), Tomokazu HARIMOTO (Japan) vs. LIANG Jingkun (China), Timo BOLL (Germany) vs. FAN Zhendong (China). FAN defeated his compatriot WANG Chuqin, recent winner of 2019 Swedish Open.

 

SHAN Xiaona will face FENG Tianwei in the Women’s Singles quarter-finals of the, as Singapore’s player created huge upset, by beating actual World no.1 and leader in the Race to Zhengzhou.

 

Both finished their encounters in straight games: actual World no.96 SHAN beat Japan’s Hitomi SATO (no. 19), while FENG (no.12) overcame China’s CHEN Meng who won four out of ten 2019 World Tour events. The winner of their upcoming clash is going to play against the winner between YANG Xiaoxin (Monaco) and Mima ITO (Japan).

 

German qualifiers Benedikt DUDA and QIU Dang eliminated three Asian pairs in main draw on their way to the Men’s Doubles final: HO Kwan Kit / LAM Siu Hang (Hong Kong) 3:0, JANG Woojin / JEOUNG Youngsik (Korea) 3:1 and finally no. 4 seeds CHEN Chien-An / CHUANG Chih-Yuan (Chinese Taipei) 3:2 (11:3, 13:13, 8:11, 8:11, 11:6).

 

They will fight for the title against China’s LIANG Jingkun / XU Xin who beat their compatriots FAN Zhendong / LIN Gaoyuan in five games.

 

All 10 titles in the Women’s Doubles event this season were taken by China’s players so far, but 2019 German Open final to be held without representatives of the strongest table tennis country. No.2 seed Miyuu KIHARA / Miyu NAGASAKI (Japan) defeated no.3 seed CHEN Meng / GU Yuting (China) 3:2 to set up final clash against no.4 seed JEON Jihee / YANG Haeun (Korea).
