Austrian Open: Dimitrij OVTCHAROV beat Tomokazu HARIMOTO in thriller to reach quarter-finals

The two strongest German players will face each other in the Men‘s Singles quarter-finals at the 2019 ITTF World Tour Platinum, bet-at-home.com Austrian Open in Linz, tomorrow, November 16th: Timo BOLL vs. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV. Current world no.8 BOLL beat Englishman Liam PITCHFORD in the most convincing today‘s game, allowing just 18 points in total to his opponent. World no.12 OVTCHAROV was extended to full distance by world no.5 Tomokazu HARIMOTO of Japan.

 

Two top-class Chinese players were upset in the Round of 16. Actual world no.41 ZHAO Zihao beat his compatriot, no.2 seed in Linz LIN Gaoyuan (world no.3) in six games, while world no.17 Hong Kong’s WONG Chun Ting prevailed against no.7 LIANG Jingkun after full seven games.

 

Sweden‘s Mattias FALCK lost to Japan‘s Koki NIWA in six games. Slovenian Darko JORGIC suffered at the hands of top seeded Chinese FAN Zhendong in four games.

 

Chinese representatives dominated in the Women’s Round of 16, as all five progressed into the quarter-finals, including 19-year-old QIAN Tianyi, 19-year-old, actual world no. 71 who beat host Sofia POLCANOVA in six games. QIAN upset her compatriot, no.2 seed LIU Shiwen in the opening round. Germany’s HAN Ying was beaten by GU Yuting in straight games.

 

Germany‘s Timo BOLL and Patrick FRANZISKA reached Men‘s Doubles semi-finals as the only European pair. They overcame Jakub DYJAS (Poland) and Cedric NUYTINCK (Belgium) in four games, but have beaten in the semis by no.1 seed JEOUNG Youngsik and LEE Sangsu of Korea.

 

Mixed Doubles event saw fantastic clash between France‘s Emmanuel LEBESSON / YUAN Jia Nan and Japan‘s Tomokazu HARIMOTO / Hina HAYATA. Asian pair won 3:2 (8:11, 11:7, 7:11, 11:7, 11:8).
