Portugal and Austria join World Cup semis

Even before the start of the semi final duels at the Men’s Event at the ITTF World Team Cup in Dubai one thing is certain – we will have Asia vs. Europe in the final. In penultimate stage China will face Taipei whilst Portugal will play against Austria.

European crowned champions Portugal seeded no. five overcame no. three seeds Japan. Marcos FREITAS beat Yuto MURAMATSU and Masataka MORIZONO whilst Joao MONTEIRO in the decisive match beat MURAMATSU.

Austria secured their place after victory over Germany. Ruwen FILUS Steffen MENGEL and Bastian STEGER failed to put Stefen FEGERL Robert GARDOS and Daniel HABESOHN under severe pressure.

China Singapore DPR Korea and Japan secured at least bronze in the Women’s event at the World Team Cup. Those four teams booked their place in the semi final.

In quarters China’s LIU Shiwen CHENG Meng and DING Ning beat Romania’s Elizabeta SAMARA Adina DIACONU and Camelia POSTOACA in straight matches. Reigning champions will meet Singapore. Tianwei and YU Mengyu and Isabelle Siyun LI were stretched to full distance against Hong Kong.

In the lower half of the draw Korea succeeded against Germany. European team had a good start; in the first match of the fixture Kristin SILBEREISEN beat KIM Hye Song. However RI Myong Sun had remained unbeaten accounting for both Petrissa SOLJA and Sabine WINTER.

Japan beat Brazil in straight matches.
