It was success for the top four seeds, as matters commenced in the Men’s event at the Times Property World Team Classic in Guangzhou. No great problems for China, Korea and Japan but for Germany, the second seeds, there was a real scare.

They were extended the full five match distance by a determined Brazilian trio formed by Thiago MONTEIRO, Casuo MATSUMOTO and Gustavo TSUBOI with Bastian STEGER eventually emerging as the European country’s saviour. He beat Cazuo MATSUMOTO in the second match of the contest, before in the concluding contest of the duel, winning a tension packed encounter in opposition to Thiago MONTEIRO.

Following the success recorded in the opening match of the contest by Bastian STEGER over Cazuo MATSUMOTO, Patrick BAUM overcame Gustavo TSUBOI before Brazil responded. Thiago MONTEIRO and Gustavo TSUBOI beat Patrick BAUM and Patrick FRANZISKA before Cazuo MATSUMOTO levelled matters by overcoming Patrick FRANZISKA to set the scene for Bastian STEGER to emerge the hero.

Austria produced the big upset in the opening round. Occupying the fifth seeded position in the draw they overcame Korea, the third seeds, by three matches to one with Robert GARDOS the backbone of victory. He beat the athletic LEE Sangsu in the second match of the fixture in a full distance five games duel before partnering Daniel HABESOHN to doubles success over JUNG Youngsik and SEO Hyudeok.

The one remaining success came from Stefan FEGERL in the concluding match of the fixture. He overcame JUNG Younsik in four games.

In Women’s Teams Event Singapore overcame Poland, whilst Japan defeated Germany. Mainstay of the Singapore success was FENG Tianwei; she beat both Magdalena SZCZERKOWSKA and Katarzyna GRZYBOWSKA with the one remaining win coming from YU Mengyu over Natalia PARTYKA. The one success for Poland came in the doubles with Katarzyna GRZYBOWSKA and Magdalena SZCZERKOWSKA beating Isabelle Siyun LI and YU Mengyu.

Meanwhile, for Japan it was very much a team effort in their win over Germany. Ai FUKUHARA suffered defeat in her opening match against Kristin SILBEREISEN before Kasumi ISHIKAWA turned the tables. She beat WU Jiaduo before partnering Sayaka Hirano to success over Petrissa SOLJA and Kristin SILBEREISEN. The fixture concluded with Ai FUKUHARA accounting for Petrissa SOLJA; she won in four games.
