More than 2000 participants in Helsingborg

European Veterans Championships 2017

In one week starting Monday the 26th of June the city of Helsingborg in the south of Sweden will be swarmed with table tennis players from all over Europe. The European Veteran Championships that will be held between the 26th of June and the 1st of July attracts over 2100 participants 500 companions and 250 volunteers.

Amongst the many Swedish participants (more than 340 players from the host nation) you can find local hopes in Anita ANDERSSON and Jonny AKESSON the latter had as a cadet and junior great success in the Youth European Championships claiming multiple golds in both team and doubles. Who did AKESSON play with you might wonder? No less than the great Jan-Ove WALDNER! Will Åkesson have the same success as he did some 35-40 years ago?

“After several years of preparation we are now finally here and we are ready to greet all our guests. We have experience organising tournaments and events here in Helsingborg since before. The challenge with this kind of event is of course the number of participants but we feel confident it will be a great tournament and experience for everyone both in the arena but also in our beautiful city ” said Anders KARLSSON the project manager of EVC 2017.

European Veteran Championships is the second largest table tennis tournament in the world and is this year hosted by Swedish Table Tennis Association in close cooperation with BTK Rekord The City of Helsingborg Helsingborg Arena Idrottens Hhus Event in Skåne and the European Table Tennis Championships.

With more than 2000 participants from all over Europe competing in a veteran’s championship we have ultimate proof that table tennis is a sport for everyone and for whole life. Few cities or even countries can arrange this kind of gigantic tournament. In Helsingborg we have both the competence and the facilities ” explained Petra SÖRLING President of the Swedish Table Tennis association.

The tournament is open for the public to come and enjoy this great table tennis fiesta for free.
