Hennebont goes to TTCLM quarter-finals

TTCLM Round 6: BOGORIA GRODZISK MAZOWIECKI – G.V. HENNEBONT TT 2:3 TTC OSTRAVA 2016 – FC SAARBRUCKEN TISCHTENNIS 3:1

 

French club Hennebont won deciding clash in Poland to secure quarter-final berth of the 2016/17 Table Tennis Champions League Men while Bogoria Grodzisk Mazowiecki continues its way as one of top 8 ETTU Cup Men clubs. Four times national champion of French ProA League beat Polish side 3:2 thanks to good team work bearing in mind that all three players contributed with one point: CHEN Chieh-An Quentin ROBINOT and Liam PITCHFORD.

 

Boris ABRAHAM`s side didn’t started well as Panagiotis GIONIS beat Liam PICHFORD in four games. World No. 29 CHEN Chieh-An leveled score against former Top 10 player on the ITTF World ranking list GAO Ning (current No. 48) while Quentin ROBINOT provided new lead to guest`s team defeating Daniel GORAK in straight sets.

 

Real drama started by the clash between GIONIS and CHEN. Greek managed to win opening set by narrow margin while in second one won ten consecutive points (0:3 10:3) to improve his lead on 2:0. CHEN refused to give up and took third game without any problem but GIONIS dominated in the ultimate chapter winning one spectacular point: he made full body rotation in his defense for 8:3 lead.

 

Final decision was in the hands of GAO Ning and Liam PITCHFORD. Opening set belonged to Singaporean who led 5:1 10:7 but it wasn’t enough for an easy ending. Guest missed two set balls and GAO finally concluded first se at 15:13. England`s player leveled in second set and won third and fourth one thanks to several points in a row (0:6 in 3rd set from 6:6 to 6:10 in 4th).

 

TTC Ostrava 2016 beat Saarbrucken 3:1 in other Group C match but German team didn’t play in its best line-up. Tomas TREGLER was man of the match as he beat both Leonardo MUTTI and Dennis KLEIN. However Saarbrucken finished first in that group while Czech side stayed on the fourth spot.
