AKERSTROM created big upset in Sweden
It was a big sensation when Fabian AKERSTROM took the title in Men’s singles in Swedish National Championships. In the final he beat Jens LUNDQUIST, the champion from last year and with four gold medals total in this class. It was 4–2. AKERSTROM is member of Växjö PK but has played before for Lyckeby BTK in Karlskrona – the town in the south east of Sweden which organized the championships for the fourth time. The people in the hall give “their son” a big support. AKERSTROM is 24 years old and his ranking in the world is 333 – 276 after Lundquist. Lundquist won the Men’s double title instead. With Pär GERELL he has four gold medals – three in a row 2009-2011 and 2013. LI Fen, 36 year-old, played for the first time in the Swedish Championships. First he won Women’s double with Sandra ANDERSSON and less than one hour later on Sunday she won Women’s singles. She played five matches with 20–0 in sets. Matilda EKHOLM, the winner 2012 and number one in Sweden, was sick and could not play. Twelve years ago LI Fen was in the quarterfinal in the Chinese National Championships. She lives in Malmö and played in Bundesliga in Germany for TTSV Saarlouis-Saarbrücken. At the Championships she have won 14th of 17th singles matches.
