No great problems for China, Korea and Japan but for Germany, the second seeds, there was a real scare. He beat Cazuo MATSUMOTO in the second match of the contest, before in the concluding contest of the duel, winning a tension packed encounter in opposition to Thiago MONTEIRO. Thiago MONTEIRO and Gustavo TSUBOI beat Patrick BAUM and Patrick FRANZISKA before Cazuo MATSUMOTO levelled matters by overcoming Patrick FRANZISKA to set the scene for Bastian STEGER to emerge the hero. Austria produced the big upset in the opening round. Chartres to extend historical moment
French champion Chartres ASTT is preparing for its second European final in three consecutive seasons. After 2010/2011 ETTU Cup title and 2011/2012 Men’s European Champions League semis, this time they play in MECL final against reigning champion Fakel Gazproma Orenburg (1st leg April 12-15th, rematch April 26-29th). Semi final success against ten times champion of Old Continent, Borussia Düsseldorf considers as the biggest success ever in Chartres` history. Confirmation comes from its president Loic BREHU: “Our qualification in MECL final last Friday at Düsseldorf has been an historical moment for the club. This feeling is shared by everyone in the club, by the coach, players and me personally”. Singaporean GAO Ning (world’s no. 14) has been provided big advantage after first leg (3:1, 11:5 in sets) winning 3:0 both his games (Patrick BAUM and Timo BOLL). Loic BREHU stressed importance of that. “The advantage from Chartres` game has been a key for our victory, but in fact we feared from the 2nd leg at Düsseldorf. We also want to thank the German spectators, Borussia`s team and staff, who has shown a real sporting spirit to us during that evening, first time for us at that level”. Chartres showed last year that it has capacity to beat Orenburg. In 2011/2012 semi final, Russian team won 1st away leg 3:2, but in returning game French side led 2:0. Par GERELL beat Dimitrij OVTCHAROV, GAO Ning overcame Vladimir SAMSONOV (both matches in five sets) so Robert GARDOS found himself just one set to close the clash. But Alexey SMIRNOV prevented him and Russians managed to won again 3:2, securing the final. “Orenburg appears as the favorite. Last year, in the semi final, we already met them; the result was quite tight. We will do our best to use our chances for the finale”, says Loic BREHU. Chartres has a chance to be first European champion from France since Caen beat Borussia in 1998/1999. Other aim of this club is to defend the national title. First rival on that way is recent MECL semi finalist Pontoise. They will meet in Round 15, on April 2nd (20h00) at Pontoise.

Last year they have been surprisingly eliminated in the group stage, while this time they stopped in the semis, by French champion Chartres. In both seasons, German side had problems with injuries, but nobody in the club doesn’t want to use as an alibi. Manager Andreas PREUSS, coach Danny HEISTER and the best player Timo BOLL congratulated to Chartres, speaking for club’s website. All are agreeing that first game at France was decisive one (host won 3:1, 11:5 in sets). “I already said that our chances after first leg are only about five percent, to advance. You have to show two good games if you want to reach the final and this time we didn’t make it. Chartres grabbed his chance with both hands and earned the final. This is a good team, congratulations to Chartres”, said Andreas PREUSS. Borussia won 3:1 (9:5) in the rematch, playing with young Ricardo WALTHER instead injured Christian SUSS. Coach Danny HEISTER knows that the chances would be much better with SUSS in the line-up, but comments that it wasn’t decisive. The best European player for years, Timo BOLL won both his games, but Robert GARDOS snatched from him one set in opening clash, which was very important, knowing that in second game GAO Ning will have 99 % 3:0 win against Ricardo WALTHER. “That’s sport. During the last couple of years we won the trophy, but this time didn’t. Chartres goes to the final while we still have the opportunity to be German champions and now this is our main goal”, said six times European champion Timo BOLL. Borussia reached its 60th title in total last December, winning German Cup. Next game in Bundesliga will be last one in regular season. Other MECL participant, FC Saarbrucken arrives at ARAG Center on April 7th. Borussia is on second place (10-3 score) behind Ochsenhausen (11-3) which already played last round.

That’s what the German coaches’ team with men’s head coach Jörg ROSSKOPF, his assistant ZHU Xiaoyong and DTTB Sports Director Dirk SCHIMMELPFENNIG decided after a training camp in Düsseldorf last week and last weekend’s Bundesleague matches. “You must fight for being in the line-up at World Championships, practice hard and deliver good international results”, says Jörg ROSSKOPF. “My players must be ready to perform well at the WTTC in May.” A hot favorite for position 7 has been Ruwen FILUS. The defensive player, quarter-finalist of the 2009 European Championships and current number 77 of the world ranking, has been suffering from back problems for some months and therefore lacks training and international tournaments. “I expect more from my national team players than from other pros.” Christian SUSS who participated in World Championships nine times so far will undergo a knee surgery to repair cartilage damage on Wednesday and will probably have to pause for six months. LIU Jia: “I believed in myself!”

Linz AG Froschberg was faced with totally unexpecte, “I have no words. Table tennis can be so cruel”, said with a big smile on his face Froschberg`s manager Gunther RENNER after last night`s WECL final, looked like he removed big burden from his shoulders. Linz AG Froschberg was faced with totally unexpected loss in 2012/2013 Women`s European Champions League final against Hungarian Budaorsi 2i SC. In first leg, at the city of Budaors, Austrians won 3:1 (10:7 in sets) so everyone believed that the rematch at Linz`s Sportpark Lissfeld Hall will be just formality. But, Hungarian side led 2:0, thanks to Szandra PERGEL (world`s no. 94) who beat LIU Jia (no. 26), and promising Dora MADARASZ (no. 147) who defeated smoothly Iveta VACENOVSKA (no. 25). “Champions League is such a big deal, because even our stars were so nervous. The title is a huge satisfaction, knowing that we had in the past years a lot of problems”. Beside Gunther RENNER, the part of Linz`s first WECL title, in 2008/2009 season, were coach BIAN Yadong and players LIU Jia and Iveta VACENOVSKA. LIU explained shortly why she lost from PERGEL. “I have played only 20 percent of what I can”! VACENOVSKA said that she was not in her usual shape, admitting that she played very poorly. Thanks to German 19 year-old Petrissa SOLJA, who beat easily Croatian Cornelia MOLNAR, Linz stayed in the game. In fourth match LIU Jia needed just two sets to secure new WECL crown for the host, but on the other side, Dora MADARASZ must won minimum 3:1 to bring the title to Hungary. Young guest won 11:0 opening set, announcing the biggest surprise ever in this competition, but LIU recovered and found the way to provide new trophy for Linz. “I believed in myself. After the first game I was so mad on me, because I want to be perfect. But I found myself thinking that I want to win because I have responsibility for my team”, commented the 2005 individual European champion LIU after the final.
