The facts told us that the best WECL is coming, with eight strong clubs and more than ever title pretenders. “We are in a very strong group with very attractive teams. It will be very difficult to reach the half final. But our team is also very strong and I think the other teams will be also not happy when they must play against us. But we re very happy about this strong Champions League and our spectators and sponsors will see great matches”, explained Alexander TEICHMANN, President of TTC Berlin Eastside. Berlin Eastside is no. 4 seed and shares the hardest WECL Group A with top seed Fenerbahce Sport Club, the 2012 finalist SVS STROCK (German team beat them in the final) and one more newcomer, French Metz TT who has former individual European champion WU Jaiduo. Unique German side in the competition prepares a better squad then in previous WECL editions. Petra LOVAS (world’s no. 73) left the club, but arrival of Kristin SILBEREISEN (no. 37) and SHAN Xiaona (no. 47), who reached three times in a row Round of 16 on strong Pro Tours this year, guarantee more competitive team. Well known defender Irene IVANCAN, silver medalist on 2011 European Championships at Gdansk-Sopot, continues as Hungarian Georgina POTA who established herself among top eight of continental championships for years. POTA, IVANCAN and LOVAS brought unique WECL title to Berlin a year ago. Berlin opens new season against Metz TT, on September 6-9th. Next round (18-20th October) could show how far the team can go, because they will meet Fenerbahce who has four Top 38 players from ITTF World Ranking list (Viktoria PAVLOVICH no. 15, Elizabeta SAMARA no. 19, CHENG I-Ching no. 33 and HU Melek no. 38). Both games will be played at Berlin whilst first abroad match comes on late October, in Austria.
MECL natural step for Walter Wels

SPG Walter Wels, which comes from the small city in Upper Austria, Wels (approximately 60.000 inhabitants), has big table tennis tradition. As the club’s sport director Rudolf BRÄUML emphasizes – thanks to „Austrian Open”, which took place in Wels several times, the city is already known within the international table tennis community. The SPG Walter Wels sports club was founded 25 years ago, from the former clubs UNION Wels and ASKÖ Wels. The founders were Gerhard DEMELBAUER, Walter WELLINGER, Hans BRÄUML, Raimund GUMPETSBERGER and Rudolf BRÄUML. The club’s best all-time achievements are four times runner-up in the Austrian national league and the quarterfinals in the ETTU-Cup. “Our club takes part in national leagues with eight different teams of male players as well as with three teams of trainees. This makes a total of around 70 players in our club. The training sessions are being held by four professional trainers. Our top team is being coached by the very experienced trainer Edvard VECKO from Slovenia”, says Rudolf BRÄUML. Walter Wels is placed in 2013/14 MECL Group C, beside newly promoted German champion Werder Bremen and French Hennebont GV. They will start their first MECL season at Bremen (September 6-9th) which is considered as one of favourites for the title. We asked Rudolf BRAUML why Walter Wels decided to play Men’s European Champions League and what the club expects from it? “We always proceeded in small steps to gain experience, and this year’s small step was the participation in the MECL. We mostly expect to gain some international experience”. – How will looks like Walter Wels` line-up in 2013/14 season? “Our new number one, ZHAN Jian from Singapore, will play with our two young players Zsolt PETE from Serbia and Dominique PLATTNER from Austria, as well as our experienced player Lehel DEMETER from Hungary, which was able to win the Austrian ranking list in the national league four times”. – What is the club’s goal in upcoming season? “Our goal is to win at least one match, and then be able to reach the semi-finals in the ETTU-Cup. In the national league we’d like to get one step closer to national record breaker SVS Niederösterreich”. The most important achievements in the club’s history are: 1999 Rise to the 2nd highest national league with three trainees 2005 Biggest success in the club’s history with the rise to the highest national league 2007 Third place of our top team and reaching the play-offs 2009 Runner-up in the national championships, 5th place in the second highest league for our second team 2010 Runner-up in the national championships, reaching the quarterfinals of the ETTU-Cup 2011 Runner-up in the national championships for the 3rd time

Young players teamed up this year, beat Darko JORGIC of Slovenia and Nils HOHMEIER of Germany in the ultimate stage of the event. Nikola GRBIC and Nikola MARINKOVIC of Serbia and Joe SEYFRIED and Loucas RIGAULT of France won bronze. New champions prised the game of Germany’s Slovenia’s pairings at the end. “JORGIC and HOHMEIER played fantastic, but we managed to stay calm even when we were 2:1 in reverse,” said POLANSKY. In the semi final Darko JORGIC and Nils HOHMEIER prevailed against Joe SEYFRIED and Loucas RIGAULT of France. Joe SEYFRIED played in the semi final last year with Romain RUIZ but that experience did not help. JORGIC and HOHMEIER dominated and won the encounter 3:1. “HOHMEIER played fantastic games throughout the tournament. Despite the shaky start we managed to pull out first game, and of course, most important, last set after close encounter. I think that French players could not find any solution against us. We played spin on spin with great success,” said JORGIC. HOHMEIER added: “We were aggressive. Our tactic was to be active and to attack.” In other semi final duel we saw winning pace changing sides from set to set. Aleksandr KHANIN and Tomas POLANSKY won two opening games, Nikola GRBIC and Nikola MARINKOVIC of Serbia recovered to level after being down 8:10, and then established the lead in the decisive game 7:5. And then lost the match, after Czech and Belarus coach called for time out. “I had to put the ball on the table and to play more on spin,” explained POLANSKY.“But I was not afraid we can lose.” Cadet Boys Doubles final: Tomas POLANSKY (Czech Republic) and Aleksandr KHANIN (Belarus) – Darko JORGIC (Slovenia) and Nils HOHMEIER (Germany) 3:2 (5:11, 11:7, 6:11, 11:9, 11:8)

Adina DIACONU and Andreea CLAPA both radiated after the final. “It is hard to play against the player with the defensive style of play. That made our job very hard,” said CLAPA. In semi final encounter Maria MALANINA and HO Tin Tin cruised through the game with confidence. They already won the Czech Open and played in the final of the Polish Open. “We are feeling very good playing together. At no point we were under pressure today against Andreea DRAGOMAN with Mihaela PLEASU,” said MALANINA. They lost first set in the semi final, but that did not affect their confidence. “We had a rough start, but then we found right tactics, with good spins,” said HO Tin Tin. In other penultimate stage duel Adina DIACONU and Andreea CLAPA beat Daria CHERNORAY and Valeria BAGAPOVA of Russia. Russia’s pairings starched Romanian favourites to full distance, but failed to seal the match. ” This whole tournament is so hard for me emotionally.
