CCB Europe Top 16 Cup Montreux February 2-3 Sofia POLCANOVA from Austria is the third youngest Women’s participant at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup Montreux but her name stands at the top of the seeding list. In spite of that fact 24-year-old Linz’s player doesn’t feel any pressure as she emphasized on the eve of the event to be held this Saturday and Sunday February 2-3. The upcoming tournament will be your fourth one at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup. How do you comment your results so far (two quarter-finals) and what do you remember the most from the previous editions? “My best result was 2015 I felt really good and could win against many top players. In 2018 the result was not the top of the top so far but I hope to make it better this year. I feel confident now with my game. I remember the atmosphere in Montreux was very nice it is a fantastic city and the organization was perfect.” How would you describe the last year in terms of your results? Are you satisfied with 2018? “I didn’t play bad but I think I could do better.” Do you feel bigger pressure than before being now no. 1 seed and what is your goal? “Actually not I think that every player there is a top player everyone can beat everyone doesn’t matter which ranking they have. I am ready to give a fight to do my best and to fight until the last point. My goal is to show a good game and to win!” Whom do you consider as favourites and why? “Me! (smile). Bernadette SZOCS: I am not afraid of anyone
CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux Last year Romania’s Bernadette SZOCS created top upset by clinching the title at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux. This season on 2nd and 3rd February she is ready to justify her status and to defend the gold. “I already felt hard work in 2019. I had good preparations. I am ready to defend the title. Of course it will not be easy it is even harder ro defend the title. However I am ready motivated and prepared well ” said SZOCS. Bernie moved to Germany’s Bremen. First tournament in the season was in Budapest. “It was a good preparation. Very strong competition ” added Bernadette. The competition at the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux will be also very tough. “All the players in top16 are strong and achieved good results in the past year but I am not afraid of anyone. Considering their rankings it is sure everybody knows to put the ball on the table and deserves to be there but I have been training very hard since last year and I am ready to put one more ball than my adversaries.” Bernadette SZOCS had a very successful year behind her. “I am very satisfied with all my acheivements in 2018. I am proud of what I did. It was a very good year for me but I wish even better 2019 because I know I can do it better ” analyzed Bernadette.” I am very proud also that I was the part of the professional T2 League. It was a new and very valuable experience. I learned a lot and I gained a lot of self confidence.” SZOCS has many new challenges in mind: “In 2019 the most important thing is to stay healthy and without injures. I want to be in Top 10 in the World. There will be also a lot of important tournaments: European Games World Championships and European Championships. SAMSONOV: Every Europe Top 16 win was special
CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux February 2-3 Four-time Europe Top 16 Cup winner Vladimir SAMSONOV is approaching his 22nd appearance at the event that gathers best 16 (before 12) players from Europe. Belarus legend started his journey through the Euro Top 16 cups in the French city of Dijon 24 years ago as the youngest participant sharing fifth spot with Jorg ROSSKOPF from Germany. The crowned champion of that edition was Jan-Ove WALDNER record holder with seven titles. 2019 goals and beyond: ITTF CEO Steve Dainton looks at four key focus areas for the world of Table Tennis in his first update of the year
Following a successful first event of the year – the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open in Budapest – the preparations excitement and anticipation are all building towards the sport’s showpiece event the Liebherr 2019 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships which will be held in the Hungarian capital between 21-28 April. The biggest Table Tennis event of the year may be less than three months away but at the same time the ITTF is planning ahead and making good progress to introduce positive reform for the 2021 World Championships: Changes to the World Table Tennis Championships active from 2021 will see the competition expanded so that players from all Member Associations have the opportunity to take part by qualifying through their respective regional World Championships stages. “We have been working hard to create a robust system which is fair and reasonable for all regions of the world but which also allows us to grow our markets globally ” opened ITTF CEO Steve Dainton. “We want to have as close to 100% of our Member Associations participating in the regional stages of the World Championships which will increase the visibility of our sport around the globe. “Ahead of this year’s World Championships in Budapest we will show that we have a professional plan in place ready for the Board of Directors to then pass final approval for the 2021 World Championships.” This expansion of the World Championships is one of the key drivers for the ITTF’s commercial growth plan for 2021. In 2021 the ITTF will be going to market with all of its commercial rights for the most significant rights cycle in its history. “As approved by the ITTF Executive Committee we will be setting up a commercial vehicle to house our commercial rights which we will be looking for strategic partners to invest into to accelerate the growth of our sport. The ITTF is currently working with Deloitte to make this a reality and the tender to look for partners for the commercial vehicle starting from the 2021 rights cycle will be released in the coming months. “This is the most important focus area for the future of the ITTF as getting this right will determine the financial resources of the ITTF for the next decade or so. “It will enable us to keep improving our key products the World Championships the World Tour and the Challenge Series whilst continuing to raise prize money to help better meet market demands. “All of this is most beneficial for the athletes who ultimately are the stars of the show. We strongly believe that at present their benefits in international Table Tennis properties are far below what they should be which is purely down to our current commercial situation. “We are looking to turn this on its head not only increasing their prize money but also the services on offer to them and treat them like the stars that they are.” Three T2Diamond events will take place in 2019 as the ITTF collaborate with T2APAC to run the events as part of a greater strategy to professionalise the ITTF World Tour. The T2Diamond events adopt a progressive competition format that creates a fresh and bold entertainment experience for Table Tennis athletes and fans across the globe. “We hope to see that the T2 model will prove to the market how best to commercialise Table Tennis. At the ITTF we are flexible and open to new ideas of taking the sport to a new level and success for the T2 events would demonstrate that there is a much better chance for Table Tennis to grow as fast as we’d like.” “Whilst this is an objective for beyond 2019 the ITTF is already planning ahead to set up a true home of Table Tennis. “This won’t just be an office but a permanent base for our High Performance Strategy and state-of-the-art training facilities. The ultimate goal would be to have a mini museum TTX tables and a retail store too. We want people to stop by and enjoy a game of Table Tennis. Why not?! “Hopefully this is the place that can help create the next stars of Table Tennis. Lionel WEBER: I would love to play against GIONIS
CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux (February 2nd to 3rd) Last year Lionel WEBER faced Dimitrij OVTCHAROV runner-up and world no.1 in the first round of the Top 16 Montreux 2018. In the 2019 edition he wants to surprise and overcome the obstacle of the first round. What are your goals for this year ? “I still want to improve my international ranking in order to start the Olympic year with the best starting position. My other objective is also to reach the main draw of the World Cup and qualify for the European Championships with the Swiss team.” What is your goal for the CCB Europe Top 16 Cup in Montreux? “Passing the first round would be a real consecration. Of course I will enter as an outsider but if there is a chance I want to take it ” said WEBER. Who do you want to play against? What would be your dream without a dream and why? “Preferably against Panagiotis GIONIS because I like to play against defenders and I’ve never played against such a good defender before. But this will probably not be possible because of the seedeings.” What would you do if you won the Top 16? “I don’t want to speculate on that I focus first on my first game.” In your opinion how important is the Top 16 for table tennis in Switzerland? “It is very important to have such event in Switzerland because it gives the opportunity to table tennis fans in our country to see live the best players in Europe playing. The atmosphere and organisation of the Top 16 has always been incredible as it was at the Swiss Open in Lausanne. Very few tournaments offer the same standard even in comparison with the European and World Championships ” added Lionel WEBER. Table Tennis to feature at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games!
Table Tennis will be played on the greatest stage once more at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is proud to announce. Confirmation has arrived from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) which included Table Tennis among the 22 sports to feature between 28 August and 8 September 2024 in the French capital. Table Tennis is one of the founder Paralympic Games disciplines having been included among eight sports at the first ever event held in Rome in 1960. “The ITTF is delighted to enjoy a close relationship with the IPC having included Table Tennis in its Paralympic sport programme since 1960. Nowadays there is strong competition among the different sports to be part of the programme but Para Table Tennis remains a key focus area of the ITTF. We are determined to cooperate ever more closely with the IPC on the integration of Para athletes into the global sports arena as one of the first international federations to tackle this subject and prioritize the opportunities provided to its Para athletes ” said Raul Calin ITTF Secretary General. The ITTF Para Table Tennis programme is constantly on the rise with currently 1 260 active players worldwide representing 91 national associations. The professionalisation and presentation of all Para Table Tennis events are also witnessing a sharp upturn with approximately 20 top-level events in store for 2019. Moreover the growth of Para Table Tennis is clearly demonstrated by the fact that it boasts the third-highest number of athletes (280) competing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with only athletics and swimming attracting more participants. The process to decide the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games sport programme had started with applications in November 2017. Now Para Table Tennis athletes can look forward to competing on the biggest stage in Paris between 28 August and 8 September 2024. Before that of course the sport will be featuring at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games between 25 August and 6 September of next year.
