Chinese Taipei too strong for England
ZEN-NOH 2019 ITTF Team World Cup England failed to produce another upset against Asian side. In the quarterfinal of the Men’s Event at the ZEN-NOH 2019 ITTF Team World Cup they lost to Chinese Taipei in straight matches. LIAO Cheng-Ting and CHEN Chien-An opened the winning row of three straight games victories. They beat Tom JARVIS and Paul DRINKHALL. Liam PITCHFORD put LIN Yun-Ju under pressure but the outcome of the match was once again three null. Paul DRINKHALL suffered by the hands of CHEN Chien-An in second single. “I think we were behind in this game especially in the doubles. They trend throughout the match and they are on top of the game. I had the chance to win in the singles but it was a bit close in all the games. It is a good tournament for us having come through the group where we won two important matches. We just need to make some small changes in our game and generally we have a perfect performance and this is the positive we are taking from this tournament;” said DRINKHALL. Liam explained how close was the game. “I think I did fairly well against Yun-Ju Lin because I was leading 9-6 in the first game but he caught up with me. I was virtually leading in all the games but he was not missing his shot and he could receive very well. This is the first time I am playing against him and I could say the match was close throughout. I think we lost to one of the strongest teams in the tournament and we have learnt a lot from this hoping to continue to work harder as a team” added PITCHFORD. In Tokyo hosts beat Germany in the quarterfinal whilst China acconted for USA. Japan the second seeds prevailed again Germany the next in line. Koki NIWA and Maharu YOSHIMURA had suffered at the hands of Timo BOLL and Patrick FRANZISKA but after that 16 year old Tomokazu HARIMOTO beat Dimitrij OVTCHAROV and in fourth match he overcame Patrick FRANZISKA. Maharu YOSHIMURA accounted for Timo BOLL in straight games. “It was shocking that we lost to England in the group stage. It was good for us as it put us under pressure to perform well against Germany. I think we need the support that we got today and the support really motivated us to give our best” said HARIMOTO. “We had a good draw in the group to beat Australia and Brazil easily but against Japan I think five percent of intensity was missing for us and the Japanese were well motivated to play well today. We were not at our peak and for us it is not a big deal. It is also good for us that before the Olympic Games we are playing against the best teams. I love the arena; this venue remind me of Beijing 2008 and it is good we are here to see it. We are familiar with Japan because we had played World Championships here. So we look forward to coming back to this venue again and give our best” stated OVTCHAROV. In other two quarterfinals Republic of Korea meets Brazil and England will face Chinese Taipei. TT Kidz youth participation initiative rolled out in Australia
Table Tennis England has signed a licensing agreement with Table Tennis Australia which will see its TT Kidz youth participation initiative rolled out in Australia. TT Kidz is a fun eight-week programme launched this year across the country which introduces new players aged 7 to 11 to the sport teaching them the basics and inspiring them to continue playing. Under the terms of the licensing agreement the name in Australia will change to Spinaroos but the TT Kidz programme structure content lesson plans activity videos and some of the marketing material will be used to inspire young players in Australia to take up the sport. The agreement was made after Table Tennis Australia received funding to develop a programme to attract youngsters into the sport leading to discussions between TTA and Table Tennis England. Greg YARNALL Head of Development and Volunteering at Table Tennis England said: “It was clear from the very first time we spoke that there was some synergies between what we had been developing over the past couple of years with what TTA were trying to achieve. Anyone interested in talking to Table Tennis England about TT Kidz please contact greg.yarnall@tabletennisengland.co.uk “Working with TTA on a licence agreement for TT Kidz was a great way to maximise resources for both parties and it’s something that as a sport we should be doing more of on a worldwide level to maximise the growth of the game.” Patrick WUERTZ Program Co-ordinator at Table Tennis Australia said: “We were looking for a programme that is innovative fun and well-researched and tested. After conversations with Greg Yarnall and seeing the work that was done we knew from the start that TT Kidz has everything that we were looking for. “Licensing the program from Table Tennis England will ensure that children in Australia have the best possible experience when starting off with table tennis.” Yarnall added that both governing bodies were keen to continue working together and that future licensing agreements with other countries were possible.

In Women’s Teams Event Romania Whilst Germany secured top position in their respective Group after victories over Brazil and Austria England is yet to play second match. Their encounter against Austria is scheduled for tomorrow. Top seed Japan will have to wait for that one to discover will they advance beyond the group stage. Austria lost their match against hosts. The English team led by fantastic Liam PITCHFORD created the upset in the opening match in Group B. Seeded at the position no. 9 they overcame no. 2 seeds at home soil 3-1. Koki NIWA and Maharu YOSHIMURA overcame Tom JARVIS and Paul DRINKHALL in the opening encounter but after that Liam PITCHFORD changed the course of the match. He beat Tomokazu HARIMOTO in full distance; DRINKHALL stayed on his path. Paul was 2-1 down but he recovered and overcame YOSHIMURA. PITCHFORD sealed the match on his second exit to the table. “We showed again today that we are a good team and we can beat any player in the singles but we just need to work on our doubles. It was a good feeling winning against Japan in such a beautiful hall. We had learnt to stay together and also have fun together and this has made us stronger as a team” said Liam PITCHFORD. Paul explained further: “It was a good feeling winning against Japan in our first match. We had started slow in the doubles but we won the singles which were also very close and what we need to do now is work hard on the doubles ahead of next match.” Austria suffered opposite fate. In Doubles Stefan FEGERL and Daniel HABESOHN secured good start before Japan took over the control in singles. NIWA and YOSHIMURA lost doubles in five games but HARIMOTO leveled the match with the 3-0 win over Robert GARDOS. HABESOHN stretched NIWA to full distance but failed to score after fine recovery from 0-2; HARIMOTO beat FEGERL in straight games. “After winning the doubles match we were a bit more confidence going into the singles but being my first match in the competition it was a bit difficult for me against HARIMOTO. Also Harimoto was a bit strong and he played very well. We knew that Harimoto would win two matches we were targeting that after winning the doubles we could at least win. Unfortunately we were not in the game having played two strong matches for our clubs in the leagues in France and Germany as well as travelling long hours to Tokyo on Monday so it was a bit tiring for us. We will be hoping to win 3-1 against England to be sure of progressing to the next round. Also the tournament will surely boost our confidence going into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifiers next year” said GARDOS. Germany had and easy day in the office. Timo BOLL played only in doubles with Patrick FRANZSIKA whilst Dimitrij OVTCHAROV and FRANZISKA were on duty in singles against Australia and Brazil. Anton KALBERG and both PERSSON and KARLSSON lost their singles matches. “I think after winning the first doubles match we were confident that we could win I also had a good chance to win my singles but unfortunately I lost. I was very disappointed that we lost but we must remain focus for the final group match against the United States. We must win or go home and I know both teams will be playing under pressure having lost the first match. I am sure we have a good chance if we could start well” said KALLBERG. In Women’s Teams’ Event Romania lost to Chinese Taipei. Elizabeta SAMARA and Daniela DODEAN MONTEIRO overcame CHENG Hsien-Tzu and CHEN Szu-Yu TPE in straight games but in singles Romania failed to score. Vanautu is the next adversary.
