Further to the approval of a series of amendments to the Tokyo 2020 qualification system principles by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Qualification Task Force in April 2020 the review of the International Federation (IF) qualification processes for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and each sport has now been finalised. The IOC has been working closely with all the IFs to determine the necessary adaptations to the Olympic qualification systems for their respective sports and athletes and National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have been consulted as well. A representative group of NOCs was involved in the review process and athlete consultation was sought through each IF. A total of 57 per cent of all the qualification places had been confirmed by the time the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were postponed. In order to adapt the qualification systems for the remaining places to the new timing of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 the qualification system principles were updated approved by the Qualification Task Force (acting on behalf of the IOC Executive Board) and shared with all the IFs. The updates included a number of changes such as an extended qualification period and new deadlines: A new qualification deadline of 29 June 2021 based on the Olympic Games starting on 23 July (day of the Opening Ceremony); The potential extension of sport-specific qualification periods if such an extension respects the qualification period deadline of 29 June 2021; The revised final entries deadline of 5 July 2021; If a qualification system specified age eligibility criteria the criteria should be extended to cover the new dates allowing athletes who were eligible in July 2020 to remain eligible in 2021. All eligibility and age criteria would be at the discretion of the respective IFs. Based on these revised qualification system principles the IOC Sports Department worked in close collaboration with all the IFs to determine if any revisions were necessary. There were four rounds of approvals from the IOC Executive Board (EB) Qualification Task Force on 25 April 6 May 13 May and 7 July 2020. The main objective was to implement qualification systems as close as possible to those approved by the IOC EB in February 2018. The following sports/disciplines have finished their qualification and the quotas have already been allocated. Team selection remains to be determined by the NOCs as in all the sports the quotas are allocated to the NOCs. The sports/disciplines are: Cycling (Road and Track) Equestrian (Dressage Eventing and Jumping) Hockey and Softball. The following sports/disciplines are continuing with their qualification process as initially approved and will simply extend the qualification period to reflect the new Games dates in 2021: Archery Artistic Swimming Baseball Basketball 3×3 Boxing Canoe (Slalom and Sprint) Diving Fencing Football Golf Gymnastics (Artistic Rhythmic and Trampoline) Handball Karate Marathon Swimming Modern Pentathlon Rugby Sailing Shooting Sport Climbing Surfing Table Tennis Tennis Triathlon and Water Polo. The following sports/disciplines have made minor adjustments to their qualification systems such as extended periods to obtain minimum criteria clarification of the process for the reallocation of any unused athlete places and clarification on the use of specific events in line with the adapted 2021 IF calendars. The sports/disciplines concerned are: Rowing Swimming Badminton Skateboarding Taekwondo and Wrestling. The following sports/disciplines have made major adjustments to their qualification systems: Athletics Cycling (BMX Freestyle BMX Racing and Mountain Bike) Weightlifting Basketball and Judo. The age requirements of the sports concerned have been amended to reflect the new Tokyo 2020 dates. As a consequence athletes who will meet the age limits in 2021 but did not in 2020 can participate in the Games. At the same time athletes who would have been within the age limit in 2020 but no longer in 2021 can still participate in the Games. There are two exceptions however: Boxing: The age requirements have been adjusted and increased by one year. Athletes must have been born between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 2002 to take part. Football: It has been confirmed that athletes who were entitled to compete in July 2020 will remain eligible in July 2021. The maximum age for the men’s event was 23 but for Tokyo 2020 this will be 24. Additionally the rule of having three athletes per team with no age restrictions remains valid. All the qualification event dates and locations remain to be determined given the ongoing global situation. These dates will be confirmed in due course by the respective IFs. All decisions have been communicated to the IFs and the full details for each individual sport can be found in the respective qualification system per sport. As part of the work of the “Here We Go” Task Force currently addressing the list of issues raised by the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 the IOC Qualification Task Force was created to address all items related to the Tokyo 2020 qualification system principles. The Task Force is composed of Robin Mitchell IOC Executive Board member and President of the Oceania Olympic Committees (ONOC); Nenad Lalovic IOC Executive Board member and President of United World Wrestling (UWW); and Kirsty Coventry IOC Executive Board member and Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

Duesseldorf Masters: ASSAR hoping for revenge
At the seventh event of the Duesseldorf Masters from Friday to Sunday five top 100 players will be at the starting line. The first and second positions in the seeding list are occupied once more by Omar ASSAR and Benedikt DUDA the two finalists of the previous week. All matches will be broadcast live on Sportdeutschland.TV Borussia-TV and on tischtennis.de. Egypt’s Omar ASSAR who was in front 3-0 in the final against Benedikt DUDA from Bergneustadt in Sunday’s match and runs ahead 7-3 in the fifth game is hoping for revenge for his defeat in finals. For ASSAR who is under contract for Borussia Duesseldorf it was his second defeat in the finale after losing to Dimitrij OVTCHAROV in June. ASSAR who is number 38 in the world is also set to take first place in the seeding of this week ahead of Benedikt DUDA the number 39. Portugal Open Winner DANG Qiu (Grünwettersbach) and Sweden’s Anton KALLBERG are starting also with high hopes for their first masters victory. Fifth top 100 player of the tournament is Albert MINO from Ecuador who currently holds 77th place in the ITTF ranking. Kilian ORT may also be counted among the extended circle of tournament favourites. Germany’s national team player from Bad Köngishofen who is competing in the Masters for his first time is currently number 198 in the world rankings. For the runner-up of German National Championships 2018 it is a re-entry into the competition. In autumn 2019 the 24-year-old who in his young career has often been set back by injuries had to take a forced break. Shortly after his return to the table at the end of January at the German Open ORT had once again folded and had to give up the tournament. Men’s national coach Joerg ROSSKOPF: “For KILIAN who is also participating in our training course this week it will be the first competition. After the German Open he had a period of problems with his ankle and calf”. The interim balance of the national coach for the Duesseldorf Masters is very good after five men’s tournaments so far. Joerg ROSSKOPF: “Overall I am very satisfied with how things have gone so far. Even if some players are missing from time to time due to injury or other plans it is a very important tournament for our national squad. The combination of training during the week and competition at the weekend fits very well because the Masters simulates the tournament situations we are currently missing. At the moment we are preparing for the European Championships in mid-September which according to the current state of affairs are to be held in Warsaw on the scheduled date.” A full field of 16 players will start on Friday afternoon (from 4 p.m.) as well as on Saturday and Sunday (from 10 a.m.) at the seventh Duesseldorf Masters. The six favourites will be challenged by a total of ten national junior players from the DTTB U23 support squad and the German Table Tennis Boarding School. ROSSKOPF added: “The Masters is also important for our young players who fill up our fields and therefore meet the best in competitive situations. These are very valuable experiences”. Duesseldorf Masters VI: Duda beats Assar in the final
Benedikt DUDA is the winner of the Duesseldorf Masters VI. The player from Bergneustadt won the final of the fifth men’s tournament after a great race to catch up against the Egyptian Omar ASSAR 4-3 who had prevented a German final in the preliminary round with a 4-2 victory over Dang QIU. The next edition in the Masters series will take place at the ARAG CenterCourt from 17 to 19 July again with world-class participation. All good things come in threes: After the quarter-final exit in the first tournament against Steffen MENGEL and the semi-final defeat at the fourth edition against Bastian STEGER Benedikt DUDA secured his first Masters victory at his third start. The 26-year-old left-hander thus continues the so far uninterrupted series of German tournament victories. After the premiere success of Timo BOLL two times in a row victory for Dimitrij OVTCHAROV and one success for Bastian STEGER the women’s tournament had gone to HAN Ying. In the todays final match the number 39 won against the one position in the ITTF ranking better classified Egyptian Omar ASSAR 8:11 10:12 9:11 11:4 11:7 11:7 and 11:2 despite losing the first three games and catched the four games in a row quite safe after increasing the speed of his game. Duda was delighted with his remarkable coup after the final: “I don’t like so much to play against OMAR. He takes the balls very early plays incredibly well from behind and from half distance. In the first three games he played very powerfully and I didn’t really know what to do. After that I just decided to take part in the rallies play less short short and to increase the speed. In the end it worked out very well.” The defeated ASSAR was not unhappy with his perfomance even he missed chances in the fifth game: “It was a good finale. I am happy that the spectators saw a good game. After the 3-0 I hoped to win the match and in the fifth set with a 7-3 lead I also had my chances. So it’s a pity but Bene was also very strong today. He became more active after he was trailing and then played at a very high level. I tried to adjust my game but in the end it wasn’t enough. Maybe it’ll work out next week.” In remarkable semi-finals with four top-60 aces the two favourites had previously confirmed the seeding list. Benedikt DUDA defeated Anton KALLBERG in six games. The Swede who like ASSAR plays for Borussia Duesseldorf only found enough effective means against the powerful game of Duda in two games and declared: ” It was not a bad game but Bene was simply better than me today. He was safer in the game and deserved to win.” Benedikt DUDA was very satisfied with his presentation in the semi-finals: “I don’t really like playing against Anton. He made a lot of easy mistakes in the beginning which of course helped me. Later he became stronger and the match more balanced but in the sixth game everything worked out for me so that I could bring home the victory.” At his fifth participation two-time finalist Dang QIU had to bury his hopes for his first Masters victory in the semi-finals. The Portugal Open winner lost 2-4 to Omar ASSAR and afterwards mourned the loss of the fifth set at the 2-2 score in which the player from Grünwettersbach had previously fended off four game points and left out some good chances: “Omar played very well. I still had my chance in the fifth set despite being down 7-10.” ASSAR was happy to bring the match home: “I am very happy about my performance and that I won because Dang who becomes stronger and stronger also played at a high level.” As the most consistent player so far Dang QIU leads the overall standings after five Masters men’s editions even without winning a tournament. Two finals and three semi-finals have given the World Ranking 52nd comfortable 120 points putting him in first place ahead of Dimitrij OVTCHAROV (110) and the duo Benedikt DUDA and Omar ASSAR (80 each) who are ranked third. The series will conclude with a final tournament with eight professionals for which five athletes will qualify on points and three will receive a wildcard. The seventh edition of the tournament series is scheduled from 17 to 19 July. The Duesseldorf Masters organized by Borussia Duesseldorf with the support of the German Table Tennis Federation will be held almost weekly until August at the ARAG CenterCourt in a knockout system with up to 16 world-class players and is intended to shorten the break in competition caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. Düsseldorf Masters #6: KÄLLBERG and QIU easily prevailed
The start of the Düsseldorf Masters VI took place on Friday without any surprises. At the fifth men’s tournament the favourites prevailed in the round of 16. On Saturday from 10 a.m. onwards in the round of the best eight the Egyptian Omar ASSAR and Benedikt DUDA will enter the Masters for the first time this weekend. All matches will be broadcast live on Sportdeutschland.TV Borussia-TV and on tischtennis.de. The two WR-Top 60 players Anton KÄLLBERG (Sweden) and Dang QIU had no problems in their opening matches in the evening. KÄLLBERG won against the experienced Thomas KEINATH (Slovakia) and Dang QIU against the german youngster Tobias SLANINA without losing a game. The other matches on the Arag Center Court actually promised more suspense. Surprisingly Nils HOHMEIER won against TTBL player Dennis KLEIN with just loosing one game. And Gerrit ENGEMANN also expected surprisingly little resistance against Cedric MEISSNER the Franziska conqueror at the German Championships 2020 in his 4-0 victory. But then it went really exciting at the end of the first day of the Masters. Tobias HIPPLER (WR 233) was able to turn a 3-0 set deficit into a victory against Kirill FADEEV (WR 489) who is more than 200 places behind him in the world rankings. All table tennis fans can look forward to four interesting quarter finals tomorrow. Fan Bo MENG will then meet Anton KÄLBERG in the first game at 10 a.m. Afterwards Dang QIU wants to make his fifth semi-final appearance in the fifth Masters perfect against Gerrit Engemann. The top seeded Omar Assar will meet Nils Hohmeier again at 11.50 am and the last match of the day will be between Benedikt DUDA and Tobias HIPPLER. The Düsseldorf Masters organized by Borussia Düsseldorf with the support of the German Table Tennis Federation is held almost weekly from June to August at the ARAG CenterCourt in a knockout system with up to 16 world-class players and is intended to shorten the competition break caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. ITTF Executive Committee: July update on COVID-19
The ITTF Executive Committee met on Friday 10th July 2020 to discuss the latest situation for international table tennis amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon receiving a comprehensive update report from the COVID-19 Task Force which was set up to monitor the global situation closely and after deliberations with key stakeholders here are the key outcomes reached during the meeting: • The Hana Bank 2020 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Busan Korea Republic will be staged between 28 February and 7 March 2021. • Due to decreasing probability of international events being staged according to the original plan in 2020 the ITTF will therefore attempt to stage “bubble” or regionally based events during the remainder of the 2020 calendar working around ever-changing international travel restrictions. • The Home of Table Tennis tender process which was postponed indefinitely in late March has confirmed revised timelines. The tender team will be reaching out to those cities which have expressed interest in the coming days to inform them about the revised process. The ITTF Executive Committee will meet again on Friday 28th August 2020 and will continue to provide further updates on all upcoming decisions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
