The opening day at the TAMANNEFTEGAS Europe Youth Top 10 in Tours brought big fights especially in the junior categories. The action at the TAMANNEFTEGAS Europe Youth Top 10 in Tours you can follow live on Facebook and YouTube Also check the live score and results here Friday: Junior Girls Already in the opening round of the Junior Girls Event we saw two great thrillers. Italy’s Jamila LAURENTI was four times at the edge but she recovered each time to win the match against Germany’s Sophie KLEE. In addition no. two seed Elena ZAHARIA of Romania was stretched to full distance against Croatia’s Hana ARAPOVIC. Top seeded Vlada VORONINA of Russia prevailed against Linda ZADEROVA of Czech Republic in five games. The atmosfere heated up in the second round. There were no easy matches. ZAHARIA was the only who finished her match in five games against Sophie KLEE but all were very close. Once again LAURENTI was forced to play all seven games but this time it was Camille LUTZ who felt the joy of success. Hana ARAPOVIC withstood the spirited comeback of Vlada VORONINA. Russia’s player recovered from 3:1 in reverse to level the match but in the seventh game Hana prevailed.“Last time when we played against each other at Top 10 in Berlin it was also seven games match but it ended in her favor ” said ARAPOVIC. Camille LUTZ remained unbeaten after three rounds and she had a very tough encounters. “Against COK it was difficult as it was expected we play against each other very often. Today I played my best match against her so far. Going seven games against Jamila was tough as the result predicts. I had 3:1 but she recovered to level. I was angry of myself. To beat LAURENTI you have to play perfectly on each ball. You can not afford the mistakes. Luckily I reduced the errors in the decisive game to win. ZAHARIA was the big favorite. I never beat her before but in our last encounter in Slovenia I had 2:0 lead so I knew I can put the pressure on her. I knew I had a chance and I took it. Our supporters helped me do that. It is so nice to play in France and to play in front great crowd in Tours. It gives me big push forward ” said LUTZ. Ozge YILMAZ of Turkey was in charge for the biggest drama in the third round. She had 3:1 against LAURENTI but then Italian player recovered and pushed into the decider which ended by narrowest of margins. Remembering 100 years Angelica Rozeanu biography now available
Celebrating one hundred years since her birth on Saturday 15th October 1921 the book “Great Triumphs Great Pain – the Life of Angelica Rozeanu” is now available. Comprising 162 pages and over 110 photographs the publication not only reflects the achievements of one of the all-time greats of our sport but of a human being who had to overcome obstacles in life that are nowadays unimaginable. Anointed women’s singles world champion on six consecutive occasions commencing in 1950 in Budapest and winning a total of 30 medals at World Championships her achievements have stood the test of time. Remarkable but even more remarkable is the fact that in 1939 when war broke out she was just 18 years old and for the next five years was in effect banned from playing table tennis – the prime years in the career of any sporting personality. As a Jew she was not allowed to enter sports halls or similar in Romania. Later in 1960 with the help of Trude Pritzi she would visit Austria and then make the decision to move to Israel leaving behind in Romania her precious medals won at World and European Championships. The fact she made such an incredibly difficult decisions was part of why she became one of the greatest champions of all and her mental strength a fact stressed by her erstwhile doubles partner Ella Constantinescu was beyond comparison. Now in the past half century Romanian female players have continued to be major contenders for honours on the world stage time and time again they have set the standard; it is the legacy of Angelica Rozeanu.
