Germany reached the ultimate stage of the Men’s Teams Event at the 2022 ITTF World team Championships Finals in Chengdu. It is their seventh final of the World Championships. Once again they withstood great pressure and in five matches duel overcame Korea Republic. It is first time after 2010 that no one from leading German trio Timo BOLL Dimitrij OVTCHAROV or Patrick FRANZISKA were not at the duty. At least one player were involved in the making four out of six silver medals in recent past. Benedikt DUDA recorded two wins. He beat JANG Woojin 3-1 and AN Jaehyun 3-1 in the decisive match. “It was a very special moment for me when I won the first match against JANG Woojin. He is a very strong player. In the fifth game I know the possibility to win for us is 50-50% I just have to play my best table tennis and I worked it out at the end ” said DUDA. QIU Dang lost to AN 1-3 at 2-2. He suffered injury during the match. “This was a sport accident. I slipped when I tried to step around. And then I want to recover the ball on the forehand side. I took a small break to recover my hip and leg but I didn’t feel any big pains so I could continue the match. Luckily I think there’s no problem for me to continue right now ” explained QIU. Coach Jorg ROSSKOPF was satisfied with the outcome. “A lot of people at home didn’t think we could do it this time but you can see what an irrepressible will can do. The fact that a complete team comes back from the areas yesterday and today shows what team spirit is worth. The whole team behind the team – the training group the coaches here and at home the medical department are immensely important. We all work extremely well together.”
Germany’s Men reached the medal rostrum in Chengdu
Germany needed full five matches against France in the quarterfinal before secured the medal rostrum in the Men’s Teams Event at the 2022 ITTF World team Championships Finals in Chengdu. France had a better start with both Alexis and Felix LEBRUN won their respective matches against Benedikt DUDA and QIU Dang. In the opening match DUDA lost to Alexis 2-3 but beat Felix in the decisive match 3-0. “I was feeling very good on the court today. I was playing a very aggressive and good match. At my match points I got a little bit unlucky especially in the fourth and fifth games. But this is sport sometimes you have luck and unluck. It was a tough defeat for me. I was a little bit angry about myself but I know we will come back in the end. I will get my fifth match. I have to focus again ” explained DUDA. “It was an incredible feeling. There was a match left and I’m just happy that I could win against Felix. He is an uprising star in table tennis and I know if I get my mind cool and clear then I could win this match. I was happy I could do it.” QIU Dang suffered the defeat against Felix (FRA) 1-3 and beat Alexis 3-1. “Today they were both fiery at the beginning. They were on fire very much especially Felix and Alexis they played very well. Felix played unbelievably today. I cannot play myself I didn’t make too many unforced errors or easy mistakes he just performed well. In the beginning the first two games were crucial I lost both of them by a very close score. And like Benedikt said maybe luck was a bit on their side but in the end we know we have to prepare for the next matches we are getting. And then Kay won 3-1. I was happy that I could go back on court and prove myself again. I didn’t feel I played much better in the 4th match. Felix was very strong today. We are now in the semifinals. It’s already a big achievement for us but we will still fight in the semifinals because we’re not done yet. Despite being all young and maybe a bit unexperienced in the World championships stage we still prove ourselves and the Germany is a very strong table tennis nation and powerhouse. We have a lot of good players and we got a chance this time. We’re happy to be in the semifinals.” Kay STUMPER changed the course of the match with the win over Jules ROLLAND after Germany was down 0-2. “I feel good. I think if I can play well I can be undefeated. I hope that we can win again tomorrow. I watched the matches of my teammates the first and second match we lost was very unlucky. So I knew ROLLAND will be very focused motivated and aggressive. In the first game I felt that luck against me 3 or 4 times so I lost it very close. Then I felt the pressure but managed it pretty well. I kept fighting and calming. I know if I can win the match I will trust my teammates that we have a good chance to win the match ” said STUMPER. In the quarterfinal of the Men’s Event Japan prevailed against Portugal in four matches whilst China beat Sweden. In the semi final of the Women’s Event Germany suffered by the hands of Japan’s players.

I was a little bit angry about the result in Tokyo Olympic Games so when I saw the draw in group 16 I know I got the second chance to beat the team. It really helps me to have a chance to play against team Hong Kong again. But in the first game I was too nervous. The first match is the hardest match for me and I need time to play loosely so I lost the first duel in this championships. In my second match today I tried to remember how I can play well and it worked ” said HAN Ying. SHAN Xiaona overcame LEE Ho Ching 3-1: “I went into the box at 0-2 and I believed the whole team and trusted myself that I could win the match. I stood with a little bit pressure but I did well. This is my first World Championships maybe also it would be the last one. Thus I just wanted to give everything I could and I did it.” In the decisive match Nina MITTELHAM succeeded against SOO Wai Yam Minnie. “The first match was not my match. I did not find my rhythm so I made many easy mistakes and ZHU Chengzhu played well. In the second match I just tried to play my games and didn’t give further chances to play what she wanted to play and it worked better. I changed my serve a little bit that I was playing better in the rallies. I didn’t take so many risks and I was just waiting for my chances then I tried to use it. At the end I won and I’m happy.” Portugal created upset by beating Slovenia 3-0 in the Men’s Team Round of 16. It is the third time after 2014 and 2016 that the team reaches the quarterfinal. In the group stage we defeated the team of Brazil which is a really good result. Now we are fully focused on next match with Japanese team “said GERALDO. “I played with Darko before it was a really close match although I lost that one but I knew I could have the possibility to win. Today I had a really good moment after I lost the second game. It was disappointing for me. But somehow I found myself. I’m really happy that I won. I showed a good level and I’m happy with my overall performance in the tournament. So I will try to keep up for tomorrow.” JORGIC said:”I came back from 1-0 in my match with GERALDO. I changed tactics a little bit but I knew from the beginning that he is a really aggressive and amazing player since we played many times before a few months ago. At that time I was also coming back from 0-2 against him. I knew it would be a tough match from the beginning but he started to play really well in the end. I was too passive on some shots but I need to congratulate them. They gave an amazing performance. This is our history for Slovenia already and this was our key to being the second place in the group to reach this round of 16. We are happy and I think everybody from Slovenia is happy.” Joao MONTEIRO beat Peter HRIBAR 3-0: “Japan is one of the best teams in the world. So we know that the match against them will be very hard but we are going to play well. I didn’t know so much about serving and receiving about how I would play and how he would play. He was playing really well especially in the serve ” said Truls. Mattias FALCK needed one game less to beat Cedric NUYTINCK: “It was really fun playing in knockout stage. Here we are aiming for the medals. It was a little bit more fun to play these matches. I’m looking forward to playing in the next round.” Anton KALLBERG overcame Adrien RASSENFOSSE in straight games: “Personally I think today was my best match so it’s getting better and better. Despite the dream start and Cedric NUYTINCK’s win over Andrej GACINA 11-9 in the deciding game in the opening match the pendulum swung to the other side immediately from the second match. Zeljko FILIP won both his encounters and Tomislav PUCAR added third point to the scoreboard. “We discussed about the strategy yesterday. After the match against Chinese Taipei the coach decided to put me and Tomislav one and two Filip number three. But in the morning when he woke up he changed his mind. It was Filip to play as number one. And this was a really good decision and he was playing really well today and won both his matches. We all did our best and luckily we managed to win ” said GACINA.” I think it doesn’t mean a lot for finishing first in the group. Actually because there are some really strong teams that lost in the group stage already. So there are some teams can come to us also in the last 16 teams. So we are happy that we are from our winning street but now in my mind is just to relax take our time and see the point to be.” Team Germany defeated France 3-1 with QIU Dang beating Felix LEBRUN in the opening match. “It was my first time to play against Felix and it’s not often that two penhold grips playing against each other. I’m happy to get that win at the end ” said Qiu Dang. Duda BENEDIKT lost to Alexis LEBRUN: “It’s a very important match for us tomorrow we’ll play against Uzbekistan. We want to win. We have to win this match. At the end we will see the matches between France against India tomorrow. Thus we will see at which position we will finish with us.” LEBRUN Alexis:”I think they played amazing and Kay STUMPER made a very good match against Emmanuel. We can play better but they play well. It was very difficult today. I don’t think the penhold grip is an advantage because there were so many differences. Today it was very hard for me because I played very bad in this match. I think he’s a very good player in different style than Felix. We will take time to forget this match and think about tomorrow. We will continue to try to attain the first or second place of the group.” Belgium secured second position. “Being in the last 16 teams is not bad but it’s always better to win the group and then we will have another chance in the next stage. Now it would be tougher but it’s okay. There are some surprises in other groups for the last 16’s draw if we don’t take China we’ll be happy. Sweden is also a strong team; they are very good players and they’re very dangerous ” said Cedric NUYTINCK.
