06/03/2011 – John MURPHY and Ashley GIVAN were crowned National Champions in their respective mens and womens singles events in the Butterfly National Senior championships which took place in the Alsaa Sports Complex Dublin over the weekend.

In the mens singles final MURPHY the top seed and Irish number 1 overcame the ever-improving Ulsterman Ashley Robinson by 4 games to 1 in a high quality match to claim a historic 4th National Mens Singles title. ROBINSON still only a Junior continued to show off his great promise for the future as he stormed through the tournament in classy fashion. But it wasn’t enough as MURPHY used all his experience to grind out a well deserved win.

In the womens singles final Ashley GIVAN defied the odds to clinch a thoroughly deserved victory over seasoned International and Irish Number 1 Amanda Mogey on a 4-1 scoreline. GIVAN still playing at Junior level once again signalled her great promise for the future with this outstanding result.

In the under 21 mens singles Paul MCCREERY overcame International Team-mate Gavin MAGUIRE in the final by 3 games to 1 in a cagey encounter. The Ulsterman was in imperious form throughout the day not dropping a set on his way to the final. In the under 21 Womens singles Mayo’s Sarah TIMLIN clinched the title defeating Dubliner Clodagh MCCULLAGH in the final.
