National Championships: HOWIESON and MILLIKEN new Scottish champs

06/03/2011 – There were several shock results at the National Championships in Scotland. In the quarter final the 6th seed Sean DOHERTY presently training in France beat the 6 times champion Gavin RUMGAY(1) in a tight 4 set match. Sean went on to beat Niall CAMERON(4) in the semi-final after being 2 sets to love down. Craig HOWIESON (2) got to the final without dropping a set. In an exciting final Sean won the first 2 sets putting Craig under severe pressure. Craig won set 3 playing more aggressively. Sean had set points in the fourth set but Craig pulled out some great attacking shots to win by 12/10 and then won the next 2 sets and the match.

Craig said afterwards that “it feels fantastic to win the title at last after having lost the last 3 in the final”. Craig also won the men’s doubles with Stewart CRAWFORD beating Gavin and Niall in another close match by 3/2.

In the ladies event a much improved Lynda FLAWS (Shetland) upset the number 2 seed Gillian EDWARDS 3/0 in the semi-final while Natasha MILLIKEN beat the number 1 seed Corrina WHITAKER in a close 5 set match. Natasha won a close fought final by 11 8 10 -11 11.
