GAVLAS and STRBIKOVA crowned champions

The winners of the 2013 ROMSTAL European Mixed Doubles Championships are Antonin GAVLAS and Renata STRBIKOVA of Czech Republic. For a first time after Mixed Doubles was separated from the rest of the European Championships program Czech Republic clinched the title. And it is not the only one. Michal OBESLO and Hana MATELOVA won bronze, which made Czech Republic most successful nation in Buzau.

Lubomir PISTEJ and Barbora BALAZOVA won silver after thrilling performance both doubles presented in the final. Both men in todays final, has knowledge how to win the titles in Mixed Doubles Event. Lubomir PISTEJ did it as junior in Terni 2001, and Antonin GAVLAS did it year earlier In Bratislava as Cadet at the European Youth Championships.

Champions in two previous occasions Andrei FILIMON and Elizabeta SAMARA departed the stage after semi final defeated. PISTEJ and BALAZOVA already showed great shape this year by reaching the Round of 16 at the World Championships in Paris and they were one of only three European pairings that manage to do that. In three opening games today they easily imposed their game and left no space for adversaries. Romania’s pairing managed to recover for a while and won fourth game, before Slovakia’s duo regained the control. In all-Czech duel Antonin GAVLAS and Renata STRBIKOVA against Michal OBESLO and Hana MATELOVA went full distance. Winners were 3:1 in the lead, but OBESLO and MATELOVA recovered to level.

Quarterfinal brought first shock for hosts. After Andrei FILIMON and Elizabeta SAMARA easily prevailed in their match against Andrey BAYBULDIN and Mariia BYKOVA of Russia, the other two pairings suffered straight games defeats. In both occasions Czech Republic prevailed. Lucian MUNTEANU and Cristina HIRICI lost against – Antonin GAVLAS and Renata STRBIKOVA, whilst Hunor SZOCS and Camelia POSTOACA suffered by the hands of Michal OBESLO and Hana MATELOVA.
