The top four seeds in the Girls’ Singles event at the ITTF 2014 Youth Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, all completed their third series of matches unbeaten on the opening day of the tournament. In the Boys’ Singles competition there was an upset after two rounds.

In second round Chinese Taipei’s YANG Heng-Wei, the no.3 seed, was beaten by Germany’s Kilian ORT in six games. Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, the no.1 seed, overcame the host nation’s Diogo CHEN, Korea’s KIM Minhyeok, the no.2 seed, accounted for Hungary’s Adam SZUDI; whilst in an equally hard fought seven games duel, the Czech Republic’s David REITSPIES, the no.4 seed, defeated Hong Kong’s HUNG Ka Tak.

Alongside Asian players DOO Hoi Kem of Hong Kong, Miyu KATO of Japan And CHIU Ssu Hua of Taipei, Adina DIACONU of Romania also booked top place in her respective group.

The hardest task for DIACONU, the no.3 seed, was in the second round. She had to save two match points before eventually overcoming Thailand’s Tamolwan KHETKHUAN, the no.5 seed.

Adina DIACONU eventually prevailed in seven games (11-9, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 9-11, 13-11).

DIACONU also beat Tina LIN of the United States and Uruguay’s Maria Pia LORENZOTTI.

Currently Tina LIN stands at no.82 on the Under 18 Girls’ World Rankings, Maria Pia LORENZOTTI is at no.99.

Hong Kong’s DOO Hoi Kem, the no.1 seed, beat the Czech Republic’s Kristyna STEFCOVA, Japan’s Miyu KATO, the no.2 seed, overcame Charlotte CAREY of Wales; whilst Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Ssu-Hua accounted for Poland’s Natalia BAJOR. In her Group STEFCOVAovercame Sarah TAN of Australia, CAREY accounted for Kim VERMAAS of Netherlands and Fagr SHOUMAN of Egypt to secure second place in her Group. At the same position is Natalia who overcame KIM Yedam of Korea and YEE Herng Hwee of Singapore.
