Switzerland’s Elia SCHMID and Italy’s Giorgia PICCOLIN secured their invitations to the forthcoming Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games by emerging successful at the Road to Nanjing Series – Africa tournament in the Egyptian city of Cairo.

In the Boys’ Singles final Elia SCHMID who occupied the second seeded position in the competition accounted for Belgium’s Martin ALLEGRO who was appearing in his fourth Youth Olympic Games Qualification tournament (11-1 11-9 5-11 11-8 11-8) whilst Giorgia PICCOLIN also listed at position no. two at the seeding recovered from a three games to nil deficit and the precipice of defeat in both the sixth and seventh games to secure victory.

She accounted for Great Britain’s Tin-Tin HO in a full distance thriller (9-11 9-11 4-11 11-6 11-6 13-11 12-10).

Third place in the Boys’ Singles event and thus the place of second reserve went to Great Britain’s Helshan WEERASINGHE. He overcame Italy’s Luca BRESSAN; whilst at the same stage of the Girls’ Singles competition Portugal’s Rita FINS defeated Hungary’s Leila IMRE.

Two more tournaments remain on the Road to Nanjing Series calendar. The Road to Nanjing Series – Latin America tournament will be staged in Buenos Aires Argentina on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22 April the Road to Nanjing Series – Oceania tournament on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st May in Avarua Cook Islands.
