Veronika MATIUNINA made a final break through in Tours

Ukraine’s Veronika MATIUNINA will say goodbye to the competition in the cadet category with the gold at the TAMANNEFTEGAS European Youth Top 10 in Tours. MATIUNINA won the title after 9 wins out of 10 matches in France this year. Russia’s Anastasiia IVANOVA is second with 7 wins whilst bronze went to Bianca MEI ROSU of Romania. Bianca has 6 wins.

After three silver medals at the European Youth Championships MATIUNINA finally clinched gold at the major European Event. In Varazdin Veronika has won silver in singles mixed doubles and team’s event.

“It is unbelievable. Finally I won the title at the big event. This is my first gold ” said Veronika who played at the Top 10 for a first time.

During three days of play Veronika lost only one match – against Clea DE STOPPELEIRE of France.

“I beat her at the European Youth Championships this year in Varazdin. I could not believe how good she played here. Clea took me by the surprise in Tours. I think that the home crowd gave her big push here and she exceeded her usual performance ” said MATIUNINA.

Other favorites failed to stop Veronika.

“For me the second day was most important. I knew I had to win all the matches in order to reach the medal rostrum. Here I overcame Bianca MEI ROSU in straight games and Mia GRIESEL as well…I guess I play good under pressure ” said Veronika.
