RUMGAY & EDWARDS triumph at the Scottish Championships

On the first day of the Scottish National Championships, Gavin RUMGAY beat the number 2 seed Craig HOWIESON in the final by 4/1 to claim his 9th title.
In the ladies event, Gillian EDWARDS came back from being 2 sets to 1 down in the semi-final to beat Corinna WHITAKER 11/9 in the fifth set, and then beat the number 2 seed Lynda FLAWS by 4/2 in the final to take the ladies title.
Gavin RUMGAY won his 9th National Championship at Bells Sports Centre on Saturday 1st March.
Despite fierce resistance from the number 2 seed Craig HOWIESON, who had set points in the fourth end to take it to 2 games all, Gavin came back to take the fourth set and then won the fifth by 11/8 to take the match 4/1.
There were several upsets in the quarter finals with Nial CAMERON (seeded 3) losing to Chris MAIN in the fifth set, and Stewart CRAWFORD (seeded 4) losing in 4 sets to young Yaser RAZOUK. In the semis, Gavin was pushed all the way by Sean DOHERTY, while Craig HOWIESON beat Colin DALGLISH who had performed very well in the earlier rounds to get to the semis for the first time
Gillian EDWARDS and Corinna WHITAKER had a battle royal in the Semi-Finals of the ladies. Corinna was 2 sets to 1 up and close to winning the match in the fourth, but lost the set 10/12 and then the decider by 11/9. In the other semi-final the second seed Lynda FLAWS was very close to going out against Lucy ELLIOTT (who had previously beaten Corinna in the opening group). Lynda was 2 sets to 1 down against Lucy, but by sheer determination won the 4th set by 13/11. She was also 2 match points down in the final set but again managed to claw her way back to win by 11/9.
In the ladies final Gillian EDWARDS got off to a strong start and won the first 3 sets comfortably but Lynda FLAWS again showed her fighting spirit by winning the fourth set 13/11, and the fifth by 11/7. Gillian held her nerve however and took the match and title in the 6th set by 11/8.
