Verviers awaits big guns at LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup

LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup in the Belgian city of Verviers starts on Friday 25th October. It is the 34th edition of the competition and so far the Event has been held in Belgium for two times. The other two times Liege was the host in 2005 and 2008.

In men’s Singles Event 20 will participate in three days competition. World’s no 2 XU Xin topping the list. He is invited as Asian Cup Winner. Next in line is Germany’s Timo BOLL, player ranked at position no. 5 at current World rankings.

BOLL is qualified as a quarterfinalist of the World Championships. By same criteria Patrick BAUM gained his place. Vladimir SAMSONOV of Belarus and Marcos FREITAS of Portugal played in the Round of 16 so their names are also on the list of participants from Europe. Jean Michel SAIVE was invited as a host nation representative and Dimitrij OVTCHAROV World’s no. 6 received wild card.

The entire tournament will be played on two tables. The oldest competitor in Verviers will be local favourite Jean Michel SAIVE (BEL) who is 43 years old and the youngest is Andre Ho (CAN) who is 21, a difference of 22 years. SAIVE is also record holder concerning number of participations. He was invited for 18 times, same as Jan Ove WALDNER. SAMSONOV was invited 15 times, Timo BOLL, 12 as well as CHUANG Chih Yuan.
