European champion in singles and team’s event at the recently concluded Championships in Schwechat, Dimitrij OVTCHAROV, is 26 year-old in the sport where the players in 30s still wins the medals. That is why his words that he was racing against the time in Austria came as a surprise.

“We heard that next year there will be only Team’s Event at the European Championships, also it is the same program for the World Championships….No Singles Event at the major Championships next year, and I am not getting any younger. I want singles titles and I feel I am in best form now. That is why I was racing against time in Austria, I wanted to win the title this time,” said OVTCHAROV.

OVTCHAROV had very good preparations for the LIEBHERR European Championships. “In August I spent three weeks in China, playing in their League. I had good score there – seven wins and three defeats. I played a lot of quality matches and enjoy my time working there. Timo BOLL was many times before in China playing in their League and now I understand why he goes there regularly. I came home very tired, did not have any break during the summer, but it all paid off. In 2007 in Belgrade I was in the semi final and that was the only occasion I was at the medal rostrum in singles at the European Championships. This gold medal now means a lot to me.”

OVTCHAROV stated that he is going to repeat the visit to China. “I am planning to go there in 2014 and 2015, to spend few months. My goal is to beat one or two top Chinese player on major Events.”

Beside European gold, OVTCHAROV won bronze medal last year at the London Olympic Games.

Speaking about final of the LIEBHERR European Championships against Vladimir SAMSONOV, Dimitrij OVTCHAROV said: “It was a hard tournament and I am so happy that I could win the title. I did not think before that I will dominate this final. I loose very often against Vladi when we play against each other in the training sessions. Vladi is still one of my role models. I still have posters of him at home. The pressure to win this tournament was really high after Timo BOLL declared he will not come.”
