German ladies topping Europe

For a fifth time in history Germany is at the top of the Europe. In the final of the Women’s Teams Event at the 2013 LIEBHERR European Championships Germany beat Romania and clinched another title.

Both today’s finalist had rich history of playing in the ultimate stages of the European Championships. Germany has been there 9 times before and won it four time so far, whilst Romania participated in their 7th final in which three times has succeeded. In last two-attempt generation led by Daniela DODEAN and Elizabeta SAMARA lost their finals against Netherlands. They never was so close like tonight, but Germany was better.

Daniela DODEAN took first match by the storm. Kristin SILBEREISEN was not able to find the answer for her approach. Elizabeta SAMARA started in same rhythm, but HAN Ying was ready for the challenge. The pendulum swung from one side to another before HAN leveled the match in full distance duel.

Young Bernadette SZOCS matured for big results. She showed courage, but managed only to stretch SHAN Xiaona to full distance.

In the fourth match, DODEAN played like she is in fire. Against HAN Ying she showed confidence and strength but she could not overcame great skills of HAN.

“You can not make it more dramatic, then it happened tonight. I thought: If Romania are so good, we have to accept it. Now a dream comes true. There is nothing better for a coach who see the players every day, how hard they work. It is wonderful that they realize their dream,” said Jie SCHOPP.

SHAN Xiaona overcame Bernadette SZOCS. “I am very happy and am proud to take the title with Germany. Even today I knew I must win at 1:1 and have really felt the pressure. After each error, it was worse. Normally, I think I’m the better player, but the pressure was so great. In the fifth set, I was too passive. I played back more aggressively at 7:9. I’m so glad.“
