The German hosts won 17 gold medals altogether in the ÖVB-Arena. However at the European Veterans Championships Russia has a new Champion in the most attractive Event – Men’s 40 category – Mukhamed KUSHKHOV.

KUSHKHOV beat his compatriot Dmitrij MAZUNOV in the final. Defensive player Elena LAMONOS, born in Belarus but equipped with a German passport and living in Germany for many years, defended the title she had won in Liberec (Czech Republic) 2 years ago. She beat the former Italian national team players Alessia ARISI in the final after she was 0-2 games down. In the semi final she had overcome Olga NEMES in 5 games.

Elena LAMONOS: “I’m overwhelmed that I won this final. Before these championships I thought my chances to win a medal were about 20 to 30 per cent. In the final I was the better player today but in the end the decisive point was that I was mentally stronger, too. Otherwise I wouldn’t have won. I’m just happy.”

Six times German champion Georg BOHM takes 2 medals home. He won the bronze in the Men’s singles 50 and secured gold partnering Andreas FEJER-KONNERT in the 40-category. Mikael APPELGREN from Sweden and Jing TIAN-ZÖRNER from Germany clinched the gold medals in the 50 singles.

Mikael APPELGREN praised the play of DING Yi: “He was a difficult task for me. He used to be a good player. I tried to return the balls shortly and afterwards played far to the corners of the table. It was much fun to play and it was nice to meet some old fellows.”
