07/’03/2010 – At the Swiss Tabletennis Championships in Crissier Nicola MOHLER successfully defended his single title. In the women’s field Monika F??R won the trophy. The experienced players: Thierry MILLER, Stefan RENOLD, Ilona RENOLD and Vera BAZZI, were not able to win a title although they delivered strong performances.

On the way to his second title in a row, the top seated MOHLER defeated ex-champion Thierry MILLER (Bulle) in the semifinal (4:2), before playing Christian HOTZ (Wil SG) in a new edition of last year’s final. As in Del?ont MOHLER, who comes from Basel and is currently playing for ESV Weil am Rhein in Germany, won in the fifth set. HOTZ, the champion of 2008, was in fact able to win the opening set (12:10), but after that he would only win 22 points against MOHLER. “Nicola was able to force his game onto me and I never found my way into the match”, said the defeated Hotz. MOHLER visibly moved by his victory, was delighted by his strong performance and by defending the championship.

In the women’s field Monika F??R won her third title after 2007 and 2008. The 19 years old, who is currently playing for Linz in Austria, won the final against Ilona RENOLD (Bremgarten), who surprisingly beat the defending champion Rachel MORET after seven sets in the semifinal, with 4:1. F??R therefore won her first title as a professional. Vera BAZZI (Belp), the almost 46 years old, was also able to reach the semifinals. She won her qarterfinal against the much younger Laura SCH?ER, who was able to reach the final in the last two years.

Denis JOSET had a very successful weekend too: He won the doubles competition together with Marc ALTERMATT and also gathered the title of the mixed competition together with Rahel ASCWANDEN. Denis JOSET had up until now only won the men’s doubles in 2004 and had to wait for further titles up to this year. He led both his partners to brillant victories: “I am very happy about the outcome. With some luck maybe even the singles final would have been possible but I am happy nontheless.” The most successfull player, though, was Monika FUHRER who won not only the singles title but alongside Laura SCHARRER also the women’s doubles title. Sch?er therefore could compensate for her rather unhappy weekend.

On Wednesday a special issue of the Sidespin Newsletter covering the Swiss Tabletennis Championships will come out.
