China Open: Ovidiu IONESCU and Alvaro ROBLES upset former World champions MA Long and XU Xin

Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum, Kaisa China Open: HAN Ying beats World No. 8, Timo BOLL lost in seven games

 

China`s LIANG Jingkun caused a huge upset today, June 1st, at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum, Kaisa China Open, by beating No. 2 seed Timo BOLL after full seven games 4:3 (5:11, 11:9, 12:10, 7:11, 4:11, 11:9, 11:5). LIANG, who overcame Frenchman Simon GAUZY in the Round of 32, is going to play in the quarter-finals against his compatriot, Olympic and World champion MA Long

 

Englishman Liam PITCHFORD extended actual World No. 9 Koki NIWA from Japan to full distance, while current individual European champion Emmanuel LEBESSON lost to top seed FAN Zhendong in straight games.

 

Four out of eight quarter-finalists are representing host nation. Korea and Japan have two players each.

 

Germany`s HAN Ying upset actual World No. 8 CHEN Xintong from China in the Women`s Singles Round of 16. Former World Top 10 (now WR 34) did it in straight games 4:0 (11:7, 11:4, 11:5, 11:8). Her next opponent will be World No. 4, host nation`s WANG Manyu.

 

Women`s World No. 24 Saki SHIBATA from Japan upset World No. 2 and top seed ZHU Yuling in the Round of 16, after full seven games. SHIBATA continued her winning streak by beating Korea`s JEON Jihee, to set semi-final clash with China`s DING Ning.

 

Romania`s Ovidiu IONESCU and Spain`s Alvaro ROBLES created a big surprise, by eliminating China`s MA Long and XU Xin in the semi-finals of the Men`s Doubles event. European pair beat 2011 World champions 3:2 (11:9, 11:9, 4:11, 4:11, 12:10) to secure their place in the final encounter against No. 1 seed FAN Zhendong and LIN Gaoyuan from China.
