Turkey created first rate upset in Zagreb

Top seeds in Junior Boys Teams Event, team of France had a shaky start against Spain. However, it was the other team who attracted all the attention on the opening day of the play at the European Youth Championships in Zagreb. Turkey beat the odds and beat both Czech Republic and Sweden to finish the day at the top spot in their Group D.

 

Turkey was one of the few teams who caused the upset in the first round. They are at the bottom of the Group D, but they beat no. two seeds Czech Republic in full distance thriller. At the beginning, both Patric KLOS and Tomas POLANSKY suffered defeats. Abdullah YIENGENLER and Batuhan ULUCAK prevailed in four games. Jiri MARTINKO brought Czech team to life before POLANSKY in five games duel leveled the match, but ULUCAK showed no mercy in the decisive duel. He beat KLOS in straight games.

 

They proved the win did not come by accident. In the second round, another favorite suffered. This evening it was Sweden.

 

Coach of the Turkish junior boys team Ufus ALTINAKAYA was delighted after incredible win against Sweden.

 

“We believed and people in Turkey believed. We are now second in the group and tomorrow we will play even better,” said coach and he praised the conditions his team has.”We practice 6 hours per day in a very good national camp and we can enjoy good results in youth categories.

 

Carlos VEDRIEL gave Spain dream opening in the match against France by beating Joe SEYFRIED in four games. Alexandre CASSIN won his match against Joan MASIP but all tree games concluded by narrow margin. Irvin BERTRAND had the most convincing win against Javier SORIA before SEYFREID sealed the encounter with four games victory over MASIP.

 

In Group D Slovenia with the leading player at the European Junior Rankings, Darko JORGIC secured valuable victory against Sweden. Darko was the instrumental of his team’s success. He beat both Simon SUDERLUND and Vilmer GEORGSSON. Peter HRIBAR joined his at the list of players who scored with the victory over Emil BERGSTROM.

 

Germany overcame Belarus in Group C. Geritt ENGEMANN beat Pavel DAUNAROVICH, but it was Tobias HIPPLER who did most important job by beating Aliaksandr KHANIN.

 

“We did not expect that we could beat Belarus’ best player. It was surprise even for us. I hope we will continue in that way,” said ENGEMANN.

 

From the lower division, Romania started their journey in expressway. Cristian PLETEA, Rares SIPOS and Alexandru MANOLE succeeded against Armenia in straight matches. There was nothing unexpected in Romani’s game, but RARES now look caught the eye. He has, at least, 10 kilograms less comparing to the period of last year’s EYC.

 

“I did it on purpose. I feel much better. I am working on my fitness and now I am looking forward putting some muscles on,” said SIPOS.

 

Cadet Boys Teams Event

 

Top favorites in the Cadet Boys Teams Event, Russia prevailed against Poland in their opening match in Group A. Vladimir SIDORENKO, Lev KATSMAN and Maksim GREBNEV recorded the straight matches victory, but not before both SIDORENKO and KATSMAN were stretched to full distance in their matches against Jan ZANDECKI and Samuel KULCZYCKI. In the same Group, Belgium had much easier task. They beat Greece without losing a game.

 

In Group B Sweden beat Spain, whilst Germany prevailed against Lithuania. Both duels concluded in straight matches.

 

France beat Romania in straight matches, whilst Moldova prevailed against England in Group C. In Group D, Italy struggled more then it was expected before they prevailed against TurkeyJohn OYEBODE won both his singles whilst Tugay YILMAZ showed good performance on the other side of the net in singles and doubles.
